The cultural heritage of Vidarbha, encompassing folk songs, tribal traditions, and artistic legacies, is poised to receive a digital lifeline for preservation. The Centre for Cultural Resources and Training (CCRT), operating under the Union Ministry of Culture, is planning to establish a specialized sub-centre in Nagpur dedicated to documenting, archiving, and promoting the region's folk arts, tribal culture, and traditional knowledge systems.
Scope of the Initiative
Headquartered in New Delhi, the CCRT works to integrate culture with education and safeguard India's diverse artistic traditions. The proposed Nagpur sub-centre will specifically cater to the rich folk heritage of Vidarbha, adjoining tribal regions, and Central India. Officials have stated that the initiative will involve comprehensive documentation and digital preservation of folk traditions, oral histories, folk music, handicrafts, and tribal cultural practices.
Digital Preservation Plans
The centre intends to develop e-resources, digital archives, and virtual exhibitions to ensure traditional art forms are preserved for future generations while making them accessible. This digital approach aims to create a lasting repository that can be accessed by researchers, students, and the public.
Opportunities for Local Artists
CCRT Chairman Dr. Vinod Indurkar, a noted theatre personality from Nagpur and former head of the fine arts department at Nagpur University, emphasized that the facility would not only preserve traditional knowledge but also create opportunities for local artists, artisans, and theatre practitioners. "The Nagpur sub-centre will host the Vidarbha Cultural Festival and national dialogue series involving artists, researchers, and educationists from across the country," he said.
Research and Education
Dr. Indurkar added that the centre would encourage research in Indian traditions, folk culture, arts education, and cultural studies. This initiative is expected to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of the region's cultural wealth.
