Trichy: Dr G Viswanathan hospital achieved a milestone by performing transcontinental tele robotic surgeries in gynaecology and general surgery on June 4. According to a hospital statement, the two procedures were conducted between ORSI Academy, Ghent University, Belgium, and Dr G Viswanathan hospital, covering a distance of 9,730 kilometres.
Remote Surgical Feat
Operating surgeon Dr Ramya Kalaiselvan from Trichy performed both surgeries remotely using the MedBot Toumai Robot stationed in Belgium. The patients remained at Dr G Viswanathan hospital, while the robotic procedures were carried out remotely with the support of an on-site surgical team led by Dr K Govindaraj and Dr R Muthuraman.
Procedures and Recovery
Both surgeries, including a left inguinal hernia TAPP repair, were completed in about 90 minutes. The hospital confirmed that both patients were discharged on June 6, having recovered well from the procedures.
This achievement marks a significant advancement in telemedicine and robotic surgery, showcasing the potential for remote surgical expertise to transcend geographical boundaries.
