Tourists in Goa Buy Ozempic, Mounjaro Drugs at Lower Prices

Panaji: Foreigners visiting Goa are buying Ozempic and Mounjaro drugs at cheaper prices compared to their home countries. Dr Vaibhav Dukle, consultant endocrinologist at Manipal Hospital, said, "We've had patients with diabetes and obesity from the UK, US, Brazil, UAE and Russia asking for these drugs for their condition. There's a very strict criteria to start these medications in the UK and because of their high cost burden, they are not easily accessible to patients under the NHS." He added that the foreigners take the medication with them back for six months.

Why Tourists Choose Goa for These Medications

The availability of Ozempic and Mounjaro at significantly lower prices in Goa has attracted medical tourists from various countries. These drugs are primarily used for managing type 2 diabetes and obesity. In many Western nations, strict regulations and high costs under public health systems like the NHS limit access. Goa's private healthcare sector offers these medications at a fraction of the price, making it a convenient destination for patients seeking affordable treatment.

Impact on Local Healthcare

This trend has raised concerns among local health authorities about potential misuse and the need for proper prescription protocols. Doctors emphasize that these drugs should only be taken under medical supervision due to potential side effects. The influx of foreign patients also highlights Goa's growing role as a hub for medical tourism, particularly for lifestyle-related conditions.
