Netflix has begun rolling out a redesigned mobile app interface in India, the United States, and several other markets worldwide. The updated version introduces a vertical video stream named "Clips," designed to help users discover new content through short video clips. This feature aims to enhance content discovery by leveraging the popularity of vertical swiping interactions commonly found on social media platforms.
Global Rollout of the New Interface
The new Netflix app is being deployed across multiple regions, including Australia, Canada, India, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippines, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States. This rollout follows earlier testing phases of a vertical video feed. A Netflix spokesperson noted, "We know that swiping through a vertical feed on social media apps is an easy way to browse video content."
Understanding Netflix Clips and Its Functionality
The "Clips" tab appears in the bottom navigation bar alongside Home, Search, and My Netflix. When users access this section, they are presented with short clips from shows and movies tailored to their viewing preferences. The interface enables users to scroll vertically through clips, with options to share content or add titles directly to their watchlist. The layout mimics short-form video feeds, featuring on-screen controls positioned alongside the video.
According to Netflix, the Clips feed currently focuses on content from its own shows and films. However, the company plans to expand the feature to include clips from podcasts and live events in the future. Additionally, Netflix is developing a Collections feature that will group clips by themes such as comedy or reality TV.
Updates to the Home Tab
Alongside the Clips feature, Netflix has updated its Home tab. The "New & Hot" section, previously a separate tab, is now integrated into the Home screen as one of the top categories. The app continues to open to the Home tab, but the navigation structure has been simplified to include fewer sections, emphasizing discovery tools like Clips.
Commenting on the new feature, Netflix's chief product and technology officer, Elizabeth Stone, stated, "Our vision is to make our mobile experience as entertaining as what you watch, delivering increasingly personalized, immersive experiences for any mood or moment. This is just the beginning."
