Meta Launches New Mobile Tool to Protect Facebook Reels from Copying
Meta's New Tool Protects Your Original Facebook Reels

In a significant move for digital creators, Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has rolled out a new suite of mobile-first content protection tools. This initiative is specifically designed to empower users by helping them safeguard their original Reels from unauthorized copying and use across its platforms.

What is Meta's New Content Protection Tool?

This innovative tool is a game-changer for creators tired of manually searching for stolen content. It automatically protects your original Facebook Reels and continuously scans both Facebook and Instagram for matches. When a duplicate is found, the system alerts you and provides clear options to manage the situation. This addresses a long-standing concern among creators who wish to maintain control over their intellectual property without investing excessive time and effort.

The technology powering this feature is the same robust matching system used in Meta's Rights Manager. However, it has been specifically tailored for a mobile-first experience, making it accessible and user-friendly for creators on the go.

Who Can Use This Feature and How to Set It Up

Currently, automatic access to this content protection tool is available for users who are part of Facebook's Content Monetisation program and meet enhanced standards for integrity and originality. The feature is also being extended to users who already employ Rights Manager.

Eligible creators will find notifications in their Feed, Professional dashboard, and profile. To check for access, simply navigate to Professional dashboard → Content → Content protection. If you believe you qualify but haven't received access, you can apply through a dedicated application process on Facebook.

Step-by-Step Guide to Registration and Protection

Getting started is straightforward. The content protection feature is accessible via the Professional dashboard within the Facebook app. Once you enroll, the system will automatically protect every new, original Reel you post on Facebook from that point forward.

But what about your existing library of Reels? The tool has you covered. After enrollment, you can visit your content library and manually select eligible Reels that were posted before you signed up, ensuring your entire body of work is protected.

Managing Detected Copies and Authorized Use

When the system identifies a match—be it a full or partial copy of your protected Reel—you will receive a notification with detailed information. This includes metrics like the view count of the copied Reel and the follower count of the account that posted it.

In your Professional dashboard, you are presented with three clear action options:

  • Track: This is the default. It allows the matching Reel to remain visible while you monitor its performance. For some eligible matches on Facebook, you can even add an attribution link that labels the Reel as 'original by' you.
  • Block: This action prevents the matching Reel from being visible on Facebook or Instagram. It's important to note that while this restricts the reel's distribution, it does not directly lead to disciplinary action against the account that posted it.
  • Release: This option releases your claim on the content, allowing the Reel to stay visible. Once released, it is removed from your match dashboard.

For accounts you have authorized to use your content, you can create an 'allow list.' Matches from these accounts will not be flagged. You can manage this list at any time in the content protection tools section.

Protecting Your Rights as the Original Owner

Meta has established processes to ensure that the true original creator can always protect their work. If another account attempts to claim your content, you can dispute the claim directly. Furthermore, you always have the option to submit a formal copyright takedown request through Facebook's intellectual property reporting channel.

It is crucial to use this tool responsibly. Misusing the system by repeatedly claiming content you do not own can lead to restrictions or a complete loss of access. Also, note that reaction videos or compilations are typically not eligible for protection. If Facebook's systems find an uploaded Reel ineligible, its protection will be revoked after posting.

By launching this tool, Meta provides a powerful, integrated solution for creators to monitor and control how their Reels are shared, eliminating the need for manual searches and external applications.
