Lucknow: The Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) vice-chairperson Prathamesh Kumar on Tuesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a private university to establish the city's first-ever plant gene bank at the upcoming Gomti Biodiversity Park. The park is being developed at a cost of Rs 14 crore.
Project Details
The plant gene bank will be spread over two acres of land inside the 25-acre biodiversity park. It will be developed and operated by the private university in collaboration with the LDA. Officials explained that the facility is termed a 'gene bank' because it stores and preserves the genetic material, or genes, of rare and endangered plant species for future use.
Preservation and Research
Seeds and plant samples will be scientifically preserved in controlled conditions inside the lab. This will help protect biodiversity and prevent species from disappearing. The preserved material can later be used for research, propagation, and plantation within the park.
Focus on Medicinal Plants
The project will primarily focus on conserving medicinal plants. Additionally, it will serve as a learning centre for students, providing education on biodiversity and environmental conservation.
