A woman from Karnataka lost Rs 28.95 lakh to fraudsters who posed as customs officials. The incident took place in Mangaluru, where the victim was tricked into believing a parcel was being held at the airport.
How the Scam Unfolded
The fraudsters contacted the woman, claiming to be customs officers. They told her that a parcel addressed to her was detained and required payment for clearance. The woman, believing the story, transferred Rs 28.95 lakh to accounts specified by the scammers.
Victim Waited in Vain
After making the payment, the woman went to the airport expecting to receive the parcel. However, no parcel arrived. She tried calling and messaging the fraudsters multiple times but received no response. Realizing she had been cheated, she approached the police and filed a complaint.
Police Investigation Underway
The Mangaluru police have registered a case and are investigating the matter. Authorities urge citizens to verify such claims directly with official departments before making any payments. This case highlights the growing threat of cybercrime in the region.
