India Launches National AI Skilling Initiative to Empower Creative Economy
The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB), in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Creative Technologies (IICT), has officially launched a comprehensive national AI skilling initiative. This ambitious program is designed to significantly strengthen India's burgeoning creative economy by equipping the next generation of digital professionals with cutting-edge artificial intelligence capabilities.
Strategic Partnerships and Scholarship Program
Partnering with global technology leaders Google and YouTube, the initiative will provide an impressive 15,000 scholarships to talented individuals across India. These scholarships are specifically targeted at creators, storytellers, and digital professionals who show high potential in transforming the media and entertainment landscape through innovative AI applications.
Information and Broadcasting Minister Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized the program's significance, stating, "The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, in partnership with Google and YouTube, is pleased to announce this national AI skilling initiative to train 15,000 participants from the creative and media sectors. This initiative is being implemented through the Indian Institute of Creative Technologies (IICT), and is aimed at strengthening AI capabilities in areas such as animation, visual effects, gaming, comics (AVGC) and media technology."
The minister further highlighted that the program will support creators, media professionals, students, and developers in building future-ready skills that will contribute to India's emergence as a global hub for digital content and technological innovation.
Program Structure and Implementation
The initiative is anchored by IICT under MIB's broader vision to integrate artificial intelligence into mainstream creative education. It specifically targets high-potential talent across multiple creative domains including media, entertainment, animation, gaming, and digital storytelling, offering a selective, impact-focused pathway to industry-ready skills.
IICT will serve as the implementation partner overseeing the national rollout of this comprehensive program. The curriculum has been co-designed with Google and YouTube experts to ensure it effectively blends AI tools, creative workflows, and platform best practices.
Two-Phase Training Approach
The training will be delivered through a structured two-phase approach designed to maximize learning outcomes:
- Phase I: Foundational Skills — This initial phase will provide scholarships for Google Career Certificates and Google Cloud's Generative AI learning paths. The objective is to democratize access to AI literacy and establish responsible AI practices among participants.
- Phase II: Specialization — The advanced phase will focus on hands-on, project-based training in specialized areas including storytelling techniques, advanced AI tools, and YouTube best practices. This training will be delivered through a hybrid model across India's major creative hubs to ensure widespread accessibility.
Industry Perspectives and Future Impact
Gunjan Soni, Managing Director - India, YouTube, shared her perspective on the partnership's potential impact: "We believe AI can unlock incredible new opportunities for India's vibrant creative economy. By working together with the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting and IICT, we can provide creators and professionals with the skills they need to become fluent in the tools of tomorrow, use AI to tell richer stories, reach new audiences, and help shape the future of media."
Soni further emphasized that this program represents a testament to YouTube's commitment to a 'Digital India' where technology empowers everyone to create, share, and innovate.
This new initiative builds strategically upon last year's successful "Create with AI" program launched by IICT and YouTube. It reinforces India's positioning as a global hub for creative and digital innovation by combining technical AI skills with practical platform expertise.
The ultimate goal of the program is to graduate a production-ready workforce capable of driving the next evolutionary stage of storytelling and digital content creation. By bridging the gap between technological advancement and creative expression, this initiative promises to transform how Indian creators engage with global audiences and establish new benchmarks for digital content excellence.
