IIIT Nagpur Announces Safety Measures After Student Suicide

Nagpur: Days after a second-year student allegedly died by suicide on hostel premises, the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Nagpur has announced a series of welfare and safety measures following discussions with police and students. Among the key measures is the introduction of a 24x7 ambulance service on campus, expected to become operational by mid-June 2026. The institute has also initiated the process for appointing a round-the-clock Residential Medical Officer (RMO) and establishing a 24x7 pharmacy facility at the hostel.

Additional security guards have been deployed to strengthen safety and monitoring at the hostel during nighttime. Also, the process is underway to appoint dedicated hostel supervisors. Emergency contact numbers have been prominently displayed across hostel and academic notice boards.

The deceased, pursuing a BTech in Computer Science Engineering with specialisation in Human Computer Interface and Gaming Technology, was found dead on May 4. In an official communication, the administration stated that student welfare initiatives are being prioritised to help the campus community cope with the tragedy. The institute further announced plans to install night-vision CCTV cameras at hostel premises and confirmed that new hostel wardens have been appointed.
