Hyderabad Students Shift to Inter Colleges for JEE, NEET Prep

Students from ICSE, CBSE, and IB schools in Hyderabad are increasingly choosing Intermediate colleges under the Telangana Board of Intermediate Education (TGBIE) for their class 11 and 12 education. This shift is driven by the need for competitive exam preparation, academic flexibility, and affordability.

As admissions begin, a growing number of students are moving away from their school boards to join Intermediate colleges that combine the state board syllabus with in-house coaching for entrance exams like JEE and NEET. This integration reduces the reliance on separate tuition centers after class 10, offering a streamlined path for students aiming for engineering or medical colleges.

Students, parents, and counselors cite several reasons for this trend. Limited seats in class 11 and 12 in schools under other boards, higher tuition fees, proximity to home, and the perception that the state board syllabus is easier to manage alongside entrance exam preparation are key factors. The availability of more college options across the city also helps reduce the stress of long daily commutes.

Student Perspectives on the Shift

Dhrithi Nahata, who recently completed class 10 from an ICSE school, explained her decision: "For me, it was more about the subjects offered. I did not want to study mathematics and accounts. That's the main reason why I am shifting from ICSE, though it has its own pros." She also sought greater flexibility and more time for extracurricular activities and exploration.

Another student, Dhruv Kumar, switched in search of better teachers and stronger entrance exam preparation. "My school has only recently started classes 11 and 12. There are very few teachers, and many are not very experienced," he said. "They had competitive exam coaching, but not as intense as that offered by inter colleges," Dhruv added.

For some, the decision was logistical. Intermediate colleges offer more locations across Hyderabad, making daily travel easier and less stressful. This convenience, combined with the academic benefits, makes the state board an attractive option for many families.
