Activision has officially announced Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, the next chapter in the acclaimed Modern Warfare series. The game is scheduled for release on October 23 and will be available on current-generation consoles, PC, and Nintendo's latest platform. Developed by Infinity Ward and published by Activision, the title will launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2, with support for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One being discontinued.
Official Announcement and Release Date
In a blog post, Activision stated, "This is Warfare Without Limits: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 releases on Friday, October 23, 2026, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. From Activision and Infinity Ward." The announcement confirms the end of support for older consoles, focusing entirely on the latest hardware.
Story and Setting
Modern Warfare 4's campaign is set on the Korean Peninsula, with the story revolving around a full-scale invasion by North Korea that triggers a larger international conflict. Players take on the role of Private Park, a South Korean soldier on the front lines, while the returning character Captain Price embarks on a separate mission related to the crisis. The campaign will take players across multiple locations, including Korea, New York, Paris, and Mumbai, blending large-scale warfare with covert operations.
Multiplayer and New Features
The multiplayer mode will launch with 12 core maps, alongside dedicated Gunfight maps and larger battlefields designed for infantry and vehicle combat. A newly announced addition is Kill Block, a map set in a military training facility whose layout changes between rounds. Activision claims the map can generate over 500 different configurations, ensuring unique routes and sightlines in each match.
The game introduces Ballistic Authority, a new system aimed at improving aiming, weapon handling, visibility, and combat feedback. Bloom has been removed from hip-fire shooting, while recoil and weapon behavior have been rebuilt to better reflect player input.
Return of DMZ Mode
Activision has confirmed the return of DMZ, the extraction-based mode where players enter a combat zone to complete objectives, gather resources, and extract successfully. This mode will feature dynamic weather conditions, shifting objectives, and AI-controlled hostile forces. More details about DMZ are expected to be shared on June 7.
Integration with Warzone
Content and progression from Modern Warfare 4 will be integrated into Call of Duty: Warzone starting with Season 1. However, Warzone support for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will end when the new season launches.
Pre-Orders
Pre-orders for Modern Warfare 4 are already live on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch 2 version are expected to open later this year.
