Bengaluru: BSWML Plans Own Garbage Fleet, Reduce Contractor Dependence
BSWML Plans Own Garbage Fleet, Cuts Contractor Reliance

In a significant shift in waste management strategy, Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited (BSWML) has announced plans to acquire its own fleet of garbage collection vehicles. This move signals the BSWML's intent to move away from the long-standing practice of relying entirely on contractors for both vehicles and manpower.

Reducing Contractor Dependence

For years, the city's waste collection has been heavily dependent on private contractors who provided both the vehicles and the workforce. This arrangement often led to inefficiencies, including irregular collection schedules and disputes over payments. By building its own fleet, BSWML aims to streamline operations and ensure more reliable service.

Planned Fleet Expansion

According to officials, the initial phase will involve the procurement of around 200 new vehicles, including compactors and mini-tippers. These will be deployed across various wards to supplement existing services. The BSWML also plans to recruit and train its own drivers and sanitation workers, reducing reliance on contract labor.

Key Benefits:

  • Improved accountability and service quality
  • Cost savings in the long term
  • Better control over collection schedules

Implementation Timeline

The process is expected to be completed in phases over the next 18 months. The first batch of vehicles is likely to hit the roads by early next year. BSWML is also exploring options for electric vehicles to promote sustainability.

Residents have welcomed the move, hoping it will address long-standing issues of garbage pile-ups and missed collections. However, some experts caution that managing a large fleet and workforce in-house could pose new challenges, such as maintenance and administrative overhead.

BSWML officials remain optimistic, stating that the transition will be gradual and that contractors will continue to play a role in areas where the new fleet is not yet operational.
