Audiobook Market Expands Rapidly Across India
The audiobook market in India is growing at a fast pace. Many people who typically avoid reading books are now turning to audio formats for content consumption. This trend emerged as a key discussion point during a session at the Jaipur Literature Festival on Friday.
Publishers Share Insights on Audio Evolution
Top publishers gathered to explore the changing landscape of audiobooks. They highlighted how this medium attracts new audiences.
Khushi Anand leads the audiobook segment at Penguin Random House India. She spoke during a session called 'Listen in: The Evolving Story of the Audio book'. Anand observed that non-traditional book readers are increasingly adopting audiobooks.
"People who never read books before are crossing over to audio content," Anand stated. "We ensure books exist in all formats so everyone can access them according to their preference."
Genre Preferences Show Cultural Differences
Anand revealed that spirituality ranks as the top genre for Indian audiobook listeners. Business, self-improvement, and mythological fiction follow closely behind.
Arcopol Chaudhuri serves as managing editor at HarperCollins India. He explained that not every literary genre translates well into audio. "Fiction and crime thrillers dominate in the US and UK markets," Chaudhuri noted. "Non-fiction attracts more listeners here in India."
Chaudhuri credited online platforms for boosting audiobook accessibility. He emphasized that publishers must explore niche markets to expand listenership further.
Audiobooks Complement Print Rather Than Replace It
Ashutosh Ramgir heads publishing at Sakal Media Group. He argued that audiobooks will not replace printed books. Instead, they extend the reach of traditional publications.
"I stopped buying physical books three years ago," Ramgir shared. "Audiobooks hooked me completely because I can listen during free moments while doing other tasks."
Ramgir provided examples of popular audiobook content. One title about Ganesh puja went viral across Maharashtra during festive seasons. Women frequently listen to titles explaining various rituals. Content related to farmers enjoys strong popularity within agricultural communities.
The publishers agreed that audiobooks represent a significant growth area. They believe audio formats will continue attracting diverse audiences across India.
