Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition Now Available on Mac After 25 Years
Age of Empires II Definitive Edition Now on Mac

Age of Empires II has finally arrived on macOS, more than two decades after its initial release. The game, now available as the Definitive Edition, has been launched by World's Edge and Feral Interactive through Steam, offering Mac users native access to the beloved real-time strategy title for the first time.

Native Support for Apple Silicon

The macOS version is built specifically for modern Macs with Apple silicon, ensuring optimized performance. Existing Steam owners of Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition can download and play the Mac version at no extra cost. According to a blog post from World's Edge, the release eliminates the need for compatibility tools, cloud gaming services, or Windows installations that Mac users previously relied upon.

What the Mac Version Includes

The macOS edition comes with the base game and three expansions: Lords of the West, Dawn of the Dukes, and Dynasties of India. Additional downloadable content, such as the recently released The Last Chieftains expansion, is available separately. The Definitive Edition features updated 4K visuals, a remastered soundtrack, new animations, and numerous quality-of-life improvements introduced over the years.

Gameplay and Features

Players can lead civilizations ranging from the Huns and Celts to Indian dynasties, building settlements, gathering resources, training armies, and advancing through different historical ages. Single-player content includes historical campaigns featuring well-known leaders and events, while skirmish mode allows players to compete against AI opponents or other Mac users online. Cooperative campaigns are also available through multiplayer.

A Legacy Continues

Originally released in 1999, Age of Empires II remains one of the longest-running real-time strategy franchises. The Definitive Edition, originally launched for Windows in 2019, has since been ported to Xbox and PlayStation 5. The Mac launch is part of Apple's broader efforts to improve gaming support on macOS and encourage developers to bring PC titles to its Apple silicon devices.

For Mac users, the Steam release provides an official, supported way to get the game, making installation, updates, and continued support straightforward. A version for the Mac App Store is also planned for later in 2026, though no specific release date has been announced.
