Emma Raducanu's Coaching Instability and Illness Hinder Comeback, Says Navratilova
Emma Raducanu, the British tennis sensation who stunned the world with her 2021 US Open victory, is once again under scrutiny following another early tournament exit and a recent withdrawal in 2026. Her struggles to maintain consistent form have sparked concerns among fans and experts alike, with tennis legend Martina Navratilova highlighting a critical issue plaguing her career.
Early Loss at Indian Wells and Miami Open Withdrawal
Raducanu's latest setback occurred at the Indian Wells tournament, where she suffered a decisive defeat to Amanda Anisimova, losing 6-1, 6-1 in a mere 52 minutes. Shortly after this disappointing performance, she announced her withdrawal from the Miami Open, citing ongoing illness. This move has further fueled worries about her physical fitness and ability to compete at the highest level.
Martina Navratilova's Critique on Coaching Instability
Martina Navratilova has openly shared her insights on what she believes is holding Raducanu back. In an interview with Sky Sports, Navratilova pointed to the constant changes in Raducanu's coaching team as a key factor. She emphasized that players need time with a coach to develop and grow effectively.
"You need somebody full-time. You don't need to have a great coach all the time. Maybe somebody even part-time, which is kind of what she's got. But you still have to stay consistent and get this person to get to know you, get the history and give them a chance to make a difference. You can't expect results to come right away - that's a long process," Navratilova explained.
She added that frequent coaching changes can lead to confusion for the player. "You need to buy into the coach and stay there for a little bit longer. I think that's the biggest mistake - she's been through too many people and then you get so many different ideas and you don't quite know which one to stick with."
Raducanu's Frequent Coaching Changes
Over the past few years, Raducanu has worked with several coaches, but none have remained with her for an extended period. Her most recent coach, Francisco Roig, joined her in August last year, but their partnership ended after the 2026 Australian Open. This pattern of instability has raised fresh concerns about her career trajectory and ability to build a solid foundation for success.
Ongoing Health Issues and Fitness Concerns
Raducanu's fitness has also been a significant concern. Prior to Indian Wells, she participated in the Qatar Open and Dubai Tennis Championships. In Doha, she was forced to retire mid-match against Camila Osorio due to illness. In Dubai, she appeared unwell again and lost her opening match to Antonia Ruzic. These recurring health problems have led to her decision to skip the Miami Open, with reports confirming she is still dealing with post-viral symptoms.
Impact on Ranking and Future Plans
Currently ranked around World No. 23, Raducanu's withdrawal from Miami is expected to cause a slight drop in her ranking. For now, she is likely to return during the clay season, hoping for a fresh start and improved stability both on and off the court. Her journey highlights the challenges faced by young athletes in maintaining peak performance amidst physical and professional hurdles.
