CMRS inspects Diamond Garden-Chembur Metro stretch for interchange with Monorail
CMRS inspects Metro-Monorail interchange at Chembur

The Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) on Wednesday commenced an inspection of the stretch between Diamond Garden Metro station and Chembur Metro station as part of the process to operationalise the much-awaited Metro-Monorail interchange at Chembur.

Safety assessments underway

Parallelly, independent safety assessor teams are also carrying out inspections and safety audits of the Monorail system linked to the interchange facility, officials said.

The integration project aims to connect the Chembur Monorail corridor with Mumbai Metro, enabling seamless movement of commuters between the two transit systems. Officials said most civil and system integration works have already been completed and the project has entered the final approval stage.

Expected benefits

A MMRDA official said, “Once the inspections and safety clearances are completed, the interchange facility is expected to be opened for public use in the coming weeks.”

MMRDA officials said the interchange is expected to boost monorail ridership, which has remained below expectations, while also improving east-west connectivity for commuters travelling between the western suburbs and Chembur. The facility will allow passengers to directly switch between Metro and Monorail services through a connected concourse.

The authority is also working on integrating multiple Metro corridors and feeder systems across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region to improve seamless urban mobility.
