Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) head coach Abhishek Nayar admitted that replacing spinner Varun Chakravarthy is a difficult task after the team's loss to Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026.
KKR's Struggle Without Varun
Speaking after the match, Nayar said, "It is hard to replace Varun. He has been a key bowler for us. His absence definitely impacted our bowling plans." KKR lost to RCB by 6 wickets at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on May 14.
Match Overview
Batting first, KKR posted a competitive total of 185 for 5, thanks to a half-century from Shreyas Iyer. However, RCB chased down the target with 3 balls to spare, powered by Virat Kohli's unbeaten 89. Varun Chakravarthy missed the match due to a niggle.
Impact on Team Strategy
Nayar elaborated on the challenges: "Varun's variations in the middle overs are crucial. We had to adjust our bowling attack, but the other bowlers tried their best. We need to find a way to cover for him if he remains unavailable." KKR's bowling lineup included spinners like Sunil Narine and Suyash Sharma, but they couldn't contain RCB's batting.
Looking Ahead
KKR will play their next match against Mumbai Indians on May 18. Nayar expressed confidence in the team's ability to bounce back. "We have a strong squad. The boys are determined to learn from this loss and come back stronger," he added.
The defeat leaves KKR in third place on the points table, while RCB moved up to second. The tournament is heading towards a thrilling finish with playoffs spots still up for grabs.
