Hyderabad: Having already secured their playoff berths, former champions Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) are set to battle for a top-two finish when they meet at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad on Friday.
Current standings and stakes
The hosts are currently placed third in the points table with 16 points from 13 games, while the Royal Challengers Bengaluru top the standings with 18 points. A victory for the visitors would confirm the top spot, granting them an extra opportunity in the title race.
Previous encounter and momentum
Both teams clashed in the season opener at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, where RCB won comfortably. However, Hyderabad has gained momentum as the tournament progressed and will be eager to avenge that loss and finish the league phase on a high.
SRH's strengths and challenges
Sunrisers Hyderabad's explosive top order has been delivering consistently, with Abhishek Sharma (507 runs) and Ishan Kishan (490 runs) taking on the opposition, despite Travis Head (367 runs) not being at his fluent best. However, the consistency of middle-order batter Heinrich Klaasen (555 runs) has largely determined their fortunes so far. Their bowling attack is well served by the return of captain Pat Cummins, while Eshaan Malinga (17 wickets), Sakib Hussain (14 wickets), and Praful Hinge (11 wickets) are contributing effectively. Nevertheless, the hosts face a tough challenge against the marauding RCB, which is functioning like a well-oiled machine.
RCB's dominant form
Royal Challengers Bengaluru have all three departments clicking, making them one of the most consistent teams in the tournament. A peerless Virat Kohli (542 runs) has been dominating the shortest format despite retiring from international T20 cricket. He has been the primary run-scorer, with Devdutt Padikkal (412 runs) and captain Rajat Patidar (337 runs) providing strong support. The presence of big-hitting players like Tim David, Krunal Pandya, Venkatesh Iyer, and Romario Shepherd makes the lineup even more lethal.
