Sanju Samson Reflects on Chennai Super Kings Move and Team Culture
Sanju Samson has provided an honest and insightful look into his experience with Chennai Super Kings, revealing that the transition has instilled a heightened sense of responsibility and a significant shift in his mindset. In a recent video released by the franchise, the wicketkeeper-batter openly discussed the unique pressures and immense pride associated with representing one of the most decorated teams in the Indian Premier League.
A Newfound Responsibility and Mindset Shift
"It's a very different feeling for me now," Samson remarked. "I'm part of a very star-studded franchise these days, which brings a different level of expectation. I feel a bit more responsible on the field. I can't afford to easily throw away my wicket. Right after you get out, you might walk into the airport and fans will say, 'Chetta, play more carefully next time.'"
He added that he has adapted surprisingly quickly to the CSK environment, feeling settled within just two weeks. "I'm getting very used to being a CSK player, and I kind of settled in a bit too quickly, I feel. After those initial weeks, I realized everyone here is just like me—focused and dedicated."
The Dhoni-Inspired Culture of Calmness
Samson highlighted the distinctive culture within the franchise, crediting former captain MS Dhoni for establishing its core values. "Being a championship side isn't about behaving arrogantly or like a champion. The base values are set by Mahi bhai, and you can actually feel his influence in each and every team player and support staff member. Everyone behaves very calmly and coolly, which aligns perfectly with how I also conduct myself. That's why I feel very settled here."
CSK's Mixed Campaign and Samson's Inconsistent Form
On the field, however, Chennai Super Kings have experienced a turbulent campaign so far in IPL 2024. They recently suffered a narrow 10-run defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad and currently occupy the eighth position on the points table, having secured only two victories from their six matches. Samson's personal journey this season has mirrored the team's inconsistency. After a quiet start, he roared back to form with a sensational unbeaten 115 against Delhi Capitals.
