KKR Opt to Bat First in Crucial IPL 2026 Encounter Against Punjab Kings
In a pivotal match of the Indian Premier League 2026 season, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have decided to bat first after winning the toss against the Punjab Kings (PBKS) at Eden Gardens on Monday. This strategic move comes as KKR, led by skipper Ajinkya Rahane, desperately search for their inaugural victory of the campaign.
Forced Changes for KKR as Key Spinners Miss Out
KKR announced two significant alterations to their playing XI, with neither of their renowned mystery spinners, Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy, featuring in the team. Rahane clarified at the toss that these were forced changes, citing an injury to Chakravarthy sustained during the previous game and Narine's absence for undisclosed reasons.
"We are going to bat first. The wicket appears to be in good condition, slightly on the drier side with less grass covering. It's a very favorable surface for batting," Rahane explained. "Success hinges on maintaining belief and confidence, and capitalizing on those critical small moments during the match. We are feeling confident despite the adjustments. Rovman Powell and Navdeep Saini have been brought into the side as replacements."
Punjab Kings Maintain Unchanged Lineup
In contrast, the Punjab Kings, captained by Shreyas Iyer, have opted for consistency by fielding an unchanged team from their last outing. Iyer expressed satisfaction with Rahane's decision to bat first, noting he had initially intended to bowl.
"I was supposed to bowl as well, so I'm quite pleased with the decision he made," Iyer remarked. "My rapport with coach Ricky Ponting has flourished since our days together at Delhi Capitals. He empowers all the young players with freedom and serves as a tremendous inspiration himself. We are sticking with the same combination for this match."

Punjab Kings Playing XI: Prabhsimran Singh (wicketkeeper), Shreyas Iyer (captain), Cooper Connolly, Nehal Wadhera, Shashank Singh, Marcus Stoinis, Marco Jansen, Xavier Bartlett, Vijaykumar Vyshak, Arshdeep Singh, Yuzvendra Chahal.
