Indian Premier League (IPL) chairman Arun Dhumal has urged cricketers to prioritize their on-field performances over social media activity during tournaments. He emphasized that players should avoid distractions such as creating reels and behind-the-scenes videos while participating in the IPL.
Dhumal acknowledged that social media has become an integral part of modern sports but stressed that it should not compromise a player's concentration during high-stakes events like the IPL. Speaking to news agency IANS, he cited Virat Kohli as an exemplary figure who remains dedicated to cricket despite having a massive online following.
"Cricketers should focus on realities rather than reels. Take Virat Kohli, for example — despite having a massive social media following, he remains completely focused on cricket when he is on the field. He has delivered results through his performances, not through reels. I feel players should avoid indulging in making reels while a tournament is underway," said Arun Dhumal in the interview.
Dhumal's remarks come amid heightened scrutiny of players' social media activity during the ongoing IPL season. Recent incidents have brought the issue to the forefront. Arshdeep Singh found himself in controversy after reports indicated that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had warned him about behind-the-scenes vlog content involving fellow players. One of Arshdeep's travel vlogs allegedly showed Yuzvendra Chahal vaping during a team flight to Hyderabad. Clips from the video circulated widely on social media before the original upload was reportedly edited.
In another instance, a Snapchat video featuring Tilak Varma drew criticism online. In the clip, Arshdeep jokingly referred to Tilak as "andhere" and suggested he apply sunscreen. Several users criticized the remarks, alleging they carried racist undertones.
These incidents have reignited discussions about player conduct and online behavior during the IPL season. Earlier this month, the BCCI reportedly issued fresh operational and security guidelines to all 10 IPL franchises. The advisory included instructions on social media conduct, anti-corruption protocols, smoking and vaping restrictions, and overall player behavior during the tournament.
