IPL 2026 Grapples with Fast-Bowler Injury Crisis as Congested Calendar Takes Its Toll

The upcoming IPL 2026 season is already facing significant disruption, with a widespread injury crisis affecting fast-bowlers across multiple franchises. Defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru will be notably impacted, as their pace spearhead Josh Hazlewood is set to miss the opening phase of the tournament.

Alongside Hazlewood, fellow Australian fast-bowlers Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins are also expected to be absent during the early part of the season. Additionally, Nathan Ellis has been ruled out of the tournament entirely. This wave of injuries has left almost every franchise without their first-choice bowlers, creating a challenging scenario for team strategies and planning.

RCB Director Mo Bobat Points to Packed Cricket Schedule

Mo Bobat, the Director of Cricket for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, believes this situation is a direct result of an increasingly congested cricket calendar. Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, March 24, Bobat emphasized the strain on players.

"I guess it's probably a symptom of a congested cricket schedule, isn't it?" Bobat stated. "Any of us who follow cricket know how challenging that is, both on a domestic and international level. So it's not ideal. It impacts your planning, and I sympathize with any teams going through this."

Bobat highlighted RCB's efforts to manage the situation through close communication with international cricket bodies and medical teams. He cited the example of Josh Hazlewood, noting that strong relationships with Cricket Australia were crucial in managing his availability last season.

"We try to control the controllables as much as we can," Bobat added. "We maintain open dialogue and trust with other bodies, but it's undeniably difficult. I don't have a solution in mind because the schedule is simply too congested."

Bobat Expresses Confidence in Phil Salt's Form Despite Recent Struggles

Amid the bowling concerns, Bobat also addressed the form of RCB batsman Phil Salt, who concluded the T20 World Cup 2026 with 130 runs in 8 innings, including just one fifty. Despite this rough patch, Bobat remains optimistic about Salt's contributions.

"Someone like Phil Salt is still ranked among the top two or three T20 batters in the world," Bobat remarked. "He really enjoys being with RCB, his partnership with Virat Kohli, and working with Andy Flower and Dinesh Karthik. I'm confident we'll see him doing his thing at the start of the season."

Salt played a pivotal role in RCB's maiden IPL trophy win last season, scoring 403 runs at a strike rate of 175.98 and rising to No. 2 in the ICC T20I rankings. Bobat described the prospect of Salt and Kohli opening the batting as "like a couple of gladiators walking out, which is always exciting."

Backup Options and Team Confidence

RCB also has the option of turning to Jacob Bethell, Salt's compatriot, who impressed with 280 runs in the World Cup, including a standout 105 in the semifinal against India at the Wankhede Stadium. Bobat emphasized the team's overall confidence, particularly in Salt, despite the current challenges.

"We've got a lot of confidence in our team," Bobat concluded. "In particular, we do have confidence in Phil Salt. They're doing some really good work right now, and we're looking forward to the season."

As IPL 2026 approaches, franchises are scrambling to adapt to these unforeseen setbacks, highlighting the broader issue of player workload in modern cricket.
