Gujarat Titans on Playoff Verge After Stunning IPL 2026 Turnaround
Gujarat Titans on Playoff Verge After IPL 2026 Turnaround

The Gujarat Titans (GT), after a sluggish beginning in IPL 2026, are now on the cusp of playoff qualification. With eight victories in twelve matches, they have accumulated 16 points and boast an improved Net Run Rate (NRR) of +0.551.

A Remarkable Turnaround

In the initial phase of IPL 2026, GT managed only three wins in their first seven matches, suffering four defeats, including a loss to Punjab Kings in their opening game. However, the tide turned dramatically following a defeat against Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. Since then, the Titans have been unstoppable, securing four consecutive victories.

Three Pillars of Success

The resurgence of Gujarat Titans in the second half can be attributed to three key factors:

  • Opening Pair: Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan – The duo has been exceptional. Captain Shubman Gill has anchored the batting with 467 runs, including four half-centuries. Sai Sudharsan, his explosive partner, is in the Orange Cap race with 501 runs. Together, they have accumulated 535 runs in 11 innings, second only to Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma (627 runs in 12 innings). Their consistent partnerships have been the bedrock of GT's batting, often building innings rather than losing early wickets. Last season, the pair scored 912 runs in 15 innings, the highest partnership tally in 2025.
  • Jason Holder's Inclusion – Acquired for Rs 7 crore at the mega auction, Holder was initially benched. However, after replacing Glenn Phillips, he transformed GT's fortunes, helping them win five of six matches. Despite limited batting contributions, Holder has dominated with the ball, taking 13 wickets in six matches at an economy rate of 6.35 and an average of 10.92. His best figures of 4/24 against PBKS and a crucial 3/20 against SRH have been instrumental. His height (6'7") allows him to extract extra bounce, complementing Kagiso Rabada and Mohammed Siraj in the death overs.
  • Lethal Bowling Attack – After a rough start, GT's bowlers have bounced back strongly, especially in the powerplay, where they lead the IPL with 25 wickets. The five-man frontline core has taken 95 wickets in 12 matches, restricting opponents below 200 in eight of their first 11 encounters. Kagiso Rabada leads the Purple Cap race with 21 wickets, including 16 in the powerplay. Mohammed Siraj has 13 wickets, with a tournament-high four first-over wicket maidens. Rashid Khan has regained form, taking 16 wickets in the middle overs. Prasidh Krishna has chipped in with 14 wickets in just eight matches, maintaining pressure with disciplined bowling.

Middle-Order Concerns

Despite their success, GT's middle order (positions 4 to 7) has struggled. The initial combination of Washington Sundar, Rahul Tewatia, Glenn Phillips, and Shah Rukh Khan failed to generate momentum. Holder replaced Phillips, and Nishant Sindhu has played the last two matches in place of Shah Rukh Khan, who has managed only 35 runs this season. Washington Sundar, after a lean run, regained form with a brilliant 50 against SRH, stitching a crucial partnership with Sudharsan.

Overall, Gujarat Titans have shown grit and collective performances. While the top order and bowling attack have been the cornerstone, Jason Holder's inclusion has added firepower, making them a formidable side.
