Delhi Capitals Bowling Coach Munaf Patel Eagerly Awaits Mitchell Starc's IPL Arrival
Despite securing victories in their opening two matches of the Indian Premier League season, the Delhi Capitals are actively anticipating the arrival of star Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc. Bowling coach Munaf Patel has emphasized the team's strong desire for Starc to join the squad promptly, highlighting his status as one of the premier bowlers in the tournament.
NOC and Injury Concerns Delay Starc's Participation
Mitchell Starc's integration into the Delhi Capitals lineup faces significant hurdles. The left-arm pacer has not yet received the necessary No Objection Certificate from Cricket Australia, which is mandatory for his participation. Compounding this administrative delay, Starc is also managing a shoulder injury that requires careful attention and recovery.
Speaking candidly before the team's recent match against the Gujarat Titans, Munaf Patel revealed his daily routine of seeking updates on Starc's situation. "I inquire with people around me every single day about the timing of his arrival, his expected joining date, and all relevant details because he is crucial for us as our main bowler," Patel stated during the pre-match press conference on Tuesday. "Honestly, I have the same question daily. As of now, there is no concrete update on when he will arrive, as any information must come directly from the Australian board, his physiotherapist, or his trainer."
Munaf Patel Praises Starc's Elite Bowling Prowess
On a lighter note, Munaf Patel acknowledged that the team's successful start has somewhat mitigated the immediate need for Starc. "We have won two games, so his absence hasn't been acutely felt yet," he remarked. However, Patel was quick to underscore Starc's invaluable qualities, describing him as one of the finest bowlers globally and arguably the top bowler in the IPL.
"If our performance dips, his importance will become even more evident. Mitchell Starc is undoubtedly one of the best in the world. In my view, there is no bigger bowler in the IPL than Starc, with Jasprit Bumrah being the only other name that comes to mind," Patel elaborated. "His extensive experience, combined with his ability to swing the new ball at speeds exceeding 140 kilometers per hour, makes him an exceptional asset. I follow up with the team management daily, and we are awaiting updates from Cricket Australia. We genuinely need him as our primary bowler."
Munaf Patel Enjoys Working with Current Bowling Unit
While awaiting Starc's arrival, Munaf Patel expressed his satisfaction and enjoyment in collaborating with the existing bowling contingent, which includes talents like Lungi Ngidi, T Natarajan, and Aquib Nabi. This diverse group provides the Capitals with varied bowling options and depth in their attack.
Insights on Fast Bowlers and Injury Management
When questioned about fast bowlers who frequently sustain injuries while delivering speeds above 150 kilometers per hour, Munaf Patel offered a pragmatic perspective. "The bowlers who consistently clock 150 kmph are often not playing regularly. If they aren't actively participating in matches, they tend to remain injured," he explained. "We originate from a cricketing system that believes the more you bowl, the better rhythm you develop. When you are injured and out of rhythm, you become more susceptible to further injuries."
The Delhi Capitals continue to monitor Mitchell Starc's status closely, balancing their current winning momentum with the strategic advantage his eventual inclusion would bring. The team remains hopeful for positive developments from Cricket Australia and Starc's medical team in the coming days.
