CSK Beat LSG by 5 Wickets, Urvil Patel Hits Joint-Fastest IPL Fifty
CSK Beat LSG; Urvil Patel Hits Joint-Fastest Fifty in IPL

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) registered their third consecutive victory in IPL 2026 by defeating Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) by five wickets at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday. The win was powered by a sensational 23-ball 65 from Urvil Patel, who smashed the joint-fastest fifty in IPL history, reaching the milestone in just 13 balls.

Urvil Patel's Record-Breaking Innings

Urvil Patel's explosive knock included the fastest fifty by a CSK batter and his maiden IPL half-century. He equaled Yashasvi Jaiswal's IPL record for the fastest fifty, set in 2023. After reaching his fifty, Patel pulled out a paper slip from his pocket that read, "This is for you, Dad," along with lines written in Gujarati. The Chepauk crowd responded with loud chants of "Urvil! Urvil!" as the CSK dugout celebrated the innings.

Patel eventually fell for 65 off 23 balls, hitting eight sixes and two fours at a strike rate of 282.61. His innings also helped CSK register 97/1 in the powerplay, the highest powerplay score at Chepauk, surpassing LSG's 91 earlier in the match.

LSG's Innings

Asked to bat first, LSG got off to a flying start through Josh Inglis, who smashed 85 off 33 balls as the visitors raced to 91 runs in the powerplay. However, CSK bowlers fought back strongly after the field restrictions, with Jamie Overton returning figures of 3/36 to help restrict LSG to 203/8.

CSK's Chase

CSK started the chase quickly through Sanju Samson and skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad. But after Samson was bowled by Digvesh Rathi while trying to pull a quicker delivery, Urvil took over the game. The young batter attacked from the start and quickly put pressure back on LSG. He hit Avesh Khan for three sixes in one over before smashing Rathi for three more sixes and a four.

One of the biggest moments of the innings came when Urvil hit Mohammed Shami over long-on for his seventh six to move to 48 off 11 balls. He then reached his fifty in 13 balls, matching Jaiswal's record.

Late Drama and Finish

Even after Urvil's dismissal, the game was not over. LSG came back into the contest through Shahbaz Ahmed and Rathi, who removed Gaikwad and Dewald Brevis. Kartik Sharma added 20 before being dismissed by Avesh Khan, leaving CSK at 169/5 in the 17th over.

As pressure built, Prashant Veer and Shivam Dube stayed calm to finish the chase with four balls remaining. Veer remained unbeaten on 18 and was dropped twice during his innings by Rathi and Nicholas Pooran. With 10 runs needed in the final over, Aiden Markram was handed the ball. After bowling two wides, he was hit for back-to-back sixes by Dube as CSK sealed the win and kept their playoff hopes alive.

Points Table Implications

With the win, CSK moved to fifth place on the points table, while LSG were pushed closer towards elimination. It was also the first time since 2019 that CSK successfully chased a target above 180.
