The long-awaited Missing Link on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway is set to open on May 1, 2026, marking a major upgrade to one of India’s busiest highway corridors.
Key Features of the Missing Link
The 13.3-kilometre stretch is designed to bypass the congested and accident-prone ghat section between Khopoli and Sinhgad. It uses advanced tunnels and viaducts to create a shorter, faster and safer route. The new alignment is expected to reduce travel time by up to 25 minutes and cut overall distance by more than 6 kilometres. Additionally, it will improve fuel efficiency and ease congestion on the existing stretch.
Benefits for Commuters
- Time Savings: Up to 25 minutes less travel time.
- Distance Reduction: Over 6 kilometres shorter route.
- Enhanced Safety: Bypasses accident-prone ghat sections.
- Fuel Efficiency: Improved due to smoother terrain and reduced idling.
- No Extra Toll: Commuters will not pay additional toll for using the new link.
Construction and Technology
The project includes multiple tunnels and elevated viaducts, engineered to handle high traffic volumes while ensuring safety. The design incorporates modern ventilation and lighting systems within tunnels, along with advanced monitoring for swift incident response.
Impact on Regional Connectivity
The Missing Link is expected to significantly boost economic activity by reducing logistics costs for freight and improving commute for daily travelers. It also aligns with the government's focus on infrastructure modernization under the Bharatmala project. The opening on May 1 will provide immediate relief to thousands of daily commuters and tourists heading to Pune and beyond.
