France cruise past Iraq with Mbappe double
Kylian Mbappe continued his sensational form in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, scoring a brace to guide France to a comfortable 3-0 win over Iraq on Tuesday. The victory keeps France on top of their group with maximum points from two matches.
Mbappe opened the scoring in the 23rd minute with a clinical finish after a swift counter-attack. He doubled the lead just before halftime, slotting home from a tight angle after a defensive lapse by Iraq. The French star now has four goals in the tournament, placing him one behind Lionel Messi in the race for the Golden Boot.
France dominate possession and create chances
France controlled the game from the outset, enjoying 68% possession and creating numerous opportunities. Iraq defended deep but struggled to contain the pace and movement of Mbappe and his attacking partners. The French midfield, led by Adrien Rabiot and Aurelien Tchouameni, dictated the tempo and kept Iraq pinned back.
Iraq’s best chance came in the 55th minute when striker Mohanad Ali forced a save from French goalkeeper Mike Maignan. However, France sealed the win in the 78th minute through a third goal from substitute Randal Kolo Muani, who tapped in after a cross from Mbappe.
Mbappe closes in on Messi in Golden Boot race
Mbappe’s four goals put him second in the Golden Boot standings, trailing only Lionel Messi, who has five goals for Argentina. According to FIFA statistics, Mbappe has now scored 14 World Cup goals in his career, moving him into the top ten all-time list. “Kylian is in incredible form,” said France coach Didier Deschamps. “He is focused and determined to help the team win.”

France leads Group D with six points, while Iraq remains on one point after a draw in their opening match. France will face Denmark in their final group game, while Iraq takes on Australia. A win or draw for France will guarantee top spot in the group.
