Indian Football Team Faces Entry Denial at Kochi Stadium Over Financial Dispute
The Indian men's football team encountered a fresh setback on Thursday, experiencing embarrassment even before stepping onto the field for their crucial Asian Cup qualifier preparation. National head coach Khalid Jamil and the entire squad were barred from entering Kochi's Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium, the designated venue for India's upcoming match against Hong Kong scheduled for March 31.
Stadium Officials Block Access Over Unpaid Fees
Coach Khalid Jamil arrived at the stadium to conduct a pitch inspection and attend a pre-scheduled press conference, but officials from the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) firmly denied him entry. The GCDA security personnel extended this restriction to the entire Indian team, preventing them from conducting their planned training session at the stadium. As a result, the team was forced to relocate their practice to Kerala Blasters' training facility in Trippunithura, located approximately 10 kilometers away from the original venue.
GCDA staff members clarified that they were acting under explicit instructions from their secretary and chairman. The authority mandated that no one would be permitted access to the stadium complex until the Kerala Football Association (KFA), the host association for the Asian Cup Qualifier, settled the full rental amount and security deposit. The financial requirements include a security deposit of Rs 25 lakh and a match rent of Rs 3 lakh.
KFA President Downplays Incident as "Minor Technical Problem"
KFA president Navas Meeran addressed the situation, stating, "The Asian Cup qualifier will proceed as planned. What occurred on Thursday was a minor technical issue that will be resolved promptly." Despite the KFA's agreement to pay the demanded amounts, the GCDA insisted on receiving the full payment on Thursday itself before allowing the press conference and practice session to take place. When the KFA requested additional time to arrange the funds, the GCDA maintained its refusal.
Coach and Journalists Left Stranded Outside Locked Gates
The dispute led to significant disruptions as Coach Jamil waited extensively at the KFA office within the stadium complex, hoping for a resolution. With no progress in negotiations, he eventually had no choice but to depart without conducting his planned activities. The situation escalated further when security personnel also prevented journalists from entering the stadium for the scheduled press conference, citing orders from higher authorities. Subsequently, the main gate of the stadium was locked, symbolizing the complete closure of access.
This incident highlights ongoing administrative challenges within Indian football, raising concerns about preparation and professionalism ahead of important international fixtures. The team's forced relocation for training adds logistical complications to their final preparations for the critical Asian Cup qualifier against Hong Kong.
