NFL Insider Adam Schefter shared a clear picture of Anthony Richardson's current status with the Indianapolis Colts: "Right now, he's stuck in Indianapolis. The value is not what the Colts would have wanted to make any potential trade. Rather than deal him away, the Colts figured it was best to hold onto him right now."
Anthony Richardson May Not Be Traded by Indianapolis Colts Anytime Soon
NFL Insider Adam Schefter explained that quarterbacks are currency; their value does not go down. But there could be a possibility for a trade to happen in training camp. Schefter explained that the Indianapolis Colts may not have received the kind of compensatory draft pick they require in exchange for Anthony Richardson right now, but this "doesn't mean that won't happen later in training camp."
Training camp is the period when there could be injuries, when a team could struggle with quarterbacks. A team could offer more for Anthony Richardson in August than they were able to pay in April, before, during, or after the draft. And so, the Colts want to keep their 2023 first-round draft pick rather than trade him. They want to keep him on the roster and address his trade later.
If he stays, he could be the backup QB of Daniel Jones, but if he were to be traded, where would he land? Let's speculate.
Anthony Richardson Linked to Green Bay Packers, New York Jets, San Francisco 49ers, and Carolina Panthers
Roundtable.io's Ross Jackson listed four possible landing spots for Anthony Richardson:
Green Bay Packers
Richardson could follow Malik Willis' path in Green Bay. He could be the backup quarterback behind Jordan Love. Malik Willis shone there, earning a starter role and a bigger contract with the Miami Dolphins. Something of that sort could happen to Richardson.
Carolina Panthers
The Colts QB could land a backup role behind Bryce Young and then prove himself to be the franchise's future. He has a high upside potential at the position as compared to Young, who suffered an inconsistent last season.
San Francisco 49ers
Sam Darnold and Mac Jones revamped their bust-labeled careers under Kyle Shanahan's guidance. Richardson did not get a chance to prove himself in Indianapolis last year; he could redeem his career in San Francisco.
New York Jets
Newly acquired Geno Smith from the Las Vegas Raiders could serve as a mentor to Richardson. The Jets lack depth at QB, with Bailey Zappe, Brady Cook, and rookie Cade Klubnik. Acquiring Richardson would give them an athletic option with impressive physical traits.
If the Colts consider trading Richardson before the 2026 season, could any of these abovementioned teams be interested in acquiring him? Only time will tell... for now, months to wait.
