AIFF Extends Payment Deadline for Two Major ISL Clubs
The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has officially granted a three-day extension to Mohun Bagan Super Giant (MBSG) and Kerala Blasters, allowing them until April 5 to submit their initial participation fee for the upcoming Indian Super League (ISL) 2025-26 season. This decision comes as the federation enforces a revised financial model that imposes strict deadlines and penalties on clubs.
Revised Financial Model and Payment Schedule
Under the new financial framework communicated to all ISL clubs, each team is required to make staggered payments:
- Rs 30 lakh was due by March 5
- Another Rs 30 lakh is scheduled between March 28 and April 4
- Rs 20 lakh must be paid by May 1
The extension specifically applies to the second installment, providing Mohun Bagan and Kerala Blasters with additional time to meet their obligations.
Strict Penalties for Non-Compliance
The AIFF has issued a stern warning to all clubs regarding payment delays. According to official communications:
- A fine of Rs 1 lakh per day will be levied for each day of delay beyond the due date
- If payments remain outstanding for seven consecutive days, the federation will issue a formal notice of disqualification
- Should the default continue for an additional four days after such notice, the club will be automatically disqualified from participating in the next ISL season
The AIFF has emphasized that all decisions regarding these matters are final, binding, and not subject to appeal.
Background: AIFF's Financial Restructuring
This strict payment regime comes in the wake of significant financial changes for the AIFF. The federation's contribution to the league's operational costs has been reduced from Rs 9.7 crore to zero, reflecting a major shift in financial responsibility.
In its 2024-25 audited statements, the AIFF reported a substantial revenue deficit of Rs 25.9 crore. This financial strain has been exacerbated by the exit of Reliance subsidiary FSDL in December 2025, which previously provided Rs 50 crore annually in commercial rights fees.
Search for New Commercial Partners
With FSDL's departure, the AIFF is actively seeking a new long-term partner to secure the league's financial future. The bidding process for commercial rights closed on March 26, with several notable entities expressing interest:
- GMR Sports
- FanCode
- Capri Sports
The federation aims to secure a partnership spanning 15 to 20 years to ensure stability for the ISL's operations and growth.
The extension granted to Mohun Bagan and Kerala Blasters highlights the delicate balance between enforcing financial discipline and maintaining competitive integrity in Indian football's premier league.
