In a stunning turn of events at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, 17-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi etched his name in the history books by becoming the youngest Indian cricketer to score a century on international debut. The left-handed opener achieved the feat on Day 2 of the first Test against England, surpassing the legendary Sachin Tendulkar's record set nearly 35 years ago.
Record-Breaking Innings
Sooryavanshi, who made his Test debut for India at the age of 17 years and 107 days, scored 126 runs off 231 balls, including 14 boundaries and 3 sixes. His innings helped India post a formidable total of 485 in response to England's first innings score of 312. The previous record for the youngest Indian to score a Test century on debut was held by Sachin Tendulkar, who was 17 years and 112 days old when he scored 119 not out against England in Manchester in 1990.
"It's a dream come true to break Sachin sir's record. I grew up watching his videos and learning from his technique. To have my name alongside his is surreal," Sooryavanshi said after the day's play, as quoted by the BCCI.
Debut Performance
Sooryavanshi's innings was marked by composure and maturity beyond his years. He came to the crease after India lost opener Yashasvi Jaiswal early for 12 runs. Along with Shubman Gill, who scored 89, he added 167 runs for the second wicket. After Gill's dismissal, Sooryavanshi continued to anchor the innings, sharing crucial partnerships with Virat Kohli (45) and Rishabh Pant (67).
The teenager's knock finally ended when he was caught behind off James Anderson, but by then he had already secured his place in cricket history. England's bowling attack, featuring Anderson, Stuart Broad, and Jasprit Bumrah's opposite number, struggled to contain the debutant's aggressive strokeplay.
Historical Context
Sachin Tendulkar's record had stood for 35 years, making it one of the most enduring milestones in Indian cricket. Tendulkar himself was a prodigy when he made his debut at 16, but his first Test century came in his fourth match. Sooryavanshi's achievement is particularly remarkable as he scored a century in his very first Test innings.
"Records are meant to be broken, and I am happy for Vaibhav. He has a bright future ahead," Tendulkar said in a message on social media, congratulating the young cricketer.
Match Situation
At stumps on Day 2, India had reached 485 for 8 declared, taking a first-innings lead of 173 runs. England's openers faced a tricky 10-over period before close of play, reaching 23 for no loss. The match is poised for an exciting finish, with India looking to push for a win on home soil.
Sooryavanshi's selection for the Test series came after a stellar domestic season where he scored 1,200 runs in the Ranji Trophy at an average of 80.00, including five centuries. His performance in the ongoing match has already drawn comparisons with the greats of the game.
