Modi accuses Congress of stalling Pachpadra refinery
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday blamed the Congress party for the delays in the construction of the Pachpadra refinery in Rajasthan, triggering a sharp response from former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, who termed the prime minister's statements as 'misleading'.
Speaking at a government function, Modi said that the project, which was first proposed during the previous Congress-led UPA government, had been deliberately stalled for years due to political considerations. 'The Congress party has always prioritized politics over development. The Pachpadra refinery is a classic example of how they delayed a crucial project that could have brought employment and prosperity to the region,' Modi said.
Gehlot counters: 'Misleading statements at government event'
In a strongly worded statement, Ashok Gehlot, the former Rajasthan Chief Minister and senior Congress leader, criticized Modi for what he called 'unfortunate behavior'. 'It is unfortunate that the prime minister behaves like a BJP leader even during official programmes and makes misleading statements at a government function,' Gehlot said.
Gehlot added that the Congress party had always supported the project and that the delays were due to bureaucratic hurdles and land acquisition issues, not political interference. 'The prime minister should focus on solving the ground-level problems instead of indulging in blame games,' he said.
Project background and significance
The Pachpadra refinery, a joint venture between Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) and the Rajasthan government, has been in the works for over a decade. The project, with an estimated cost of over Rs 43,000 crore, is expected to have a capacity of 9 million metric tonnes per annum. It aims to boost the region's economy by generating direct and indirect employment and reducing the state's dependence on imported petroleum products.
However, the project has faced multiple delays due to issues such as land acquisition, environmental clearances, and funding. The state government has been trying to fast-track the project, but progress has been slow.
Political implications ahead of elections
The exchange comes ahead of the upcoming assembly elections in Rajasthan, where both the BJP and Congress are trying to gain an edge. The Pachpadra refinery has become a key issue, with the BJP accusing the Congress of neglecting the region's development. The Congress, on the other hand, has accused the BJP of trying to take credit for projects that were initiated during Congress rule.
Political analysts say that the war of words is likely to intensify as the elections approach, with both parties using development projects as a tool to attract voters. The Pachpadra refinery, once completed, could be a major boost for the region's economy, but its delayed progress remains a point of contention between the two parties.
