The Uttar Pradesh Secondary Education Board has put forward a proposal to grant bonus marks to students in Classes X and XII who achieve excellence in sports competitions at the state, national, and international levels. This initiative is designed to encourage young athletes to effectively balance their academic pursuits with sporting endeavors.
Board Secretary Bhagwati Singh confirmed that the proposal has been submitted to the state government for final approval. According to the proposed guidelines, students who secure the first, second, or third position in state-level competitions will receive five bonus marks. Participation at the national level will earn them seven bonus marks, while those who clinch the top three positions in national events will be awarded ten bonus marks.
For international competitions, students who participate will receive fifteen bonus marks, and those finishing among the top three will be granted twenty bonus marks. The Board has stipulated that these bonus marks will only be awarded to students who submit their participation or achievement certificates before January 31 of the examination year, prior to appearing for the high school or intermediate examinations.
Students taking compartment examinations will not be eligible for this benefit. Singh explained that under the new system, bonus marks will be directly added to a student's total academic score. The proposal also mentions that if a student fails the examination, the bonus marks can be used as grace marks in any two subjects. A student can claim bonus marks only once for a single certificate. In cases where a student possesses multiple certificates, only the certificate with the highest eligible marks will be considered.
The benefit will apply exclusively to competitions organized under the School Games Federation of India (SGFI). Students participating in sports competitions during Classes IX and XI will receive corresponding bonus marks in their Class X and XII Board examinations, respectively.
