Sunil Chhetri: The Comma in a Career That Defies Full Stops

For most athletes, retirement represents a definitive full stop to their professional journey. For Sunil Chhetri, India's football icon, it proved to be merely a comma—a pause in a narrative that continues to unfold with passion and purpose. The remarkable transformation from a young player handing out pamphlets to auto drivers, urging them to attend his club's matches, to walking into packed stadiums with thunderous chants of his name echoing across stands, encapsulates a career built on perseverance.

Thirteen Years in Bengaluru: Finding Home and Heart

Thirteen transformative years in Bengaluru. Countless memorable goals scored. An emotional farewell to the national jersey, followed by a surprising return to international duty. Sunil Chhetri's story transcends mere statistics, revealing instead an enduring, stubborn love for football that has defined his life. As Bangalore Times Headliner, Chhetri speaks candidly about discovering a home in Bengaluru, navigating retirement and return, and embracing fatherhood with equal dedication.

The Bengaluru Connection: From Professional Decision to Personal Belonging

When asked about spending over 13 years in Bengaluru, what initially drew him to the city and how that relationship evolved, Chhetri reflects: "The first choice wasn't to settle here permanently; it was purely about the club. They presented a vision of running things in a proper, professional manner. This represented a difficult decision because circumstances were easier where I was previously. However, I followed my gut instinct. Within just a couple of years, I realized this was truly an amazing place. Every single year, my love for both the club and the city grew exponentially. I cannot pinpoint one specific moment—it happened gradually and organically. With every passing year, I felt increasingly comfortable and happier. Suddenly, it has been thirteen incredible years."

Inspiring the Next Generation: The Ultimate Reward

Regarding the profound impact of hearing young players say they picked up football because of him, Chhetri shares: "I have been extraordinarily fortunate to receive so much love and admiration throughout my career. But the most satisfying and humbling experience is undoubtedly when a youngster approaches me and says they started playing football because of my journey. That gives me immense, unparalleled happiness. If my story can encourage even a few kids to pursue their dreams, that is absolutely amazing and rewarding."

The Retirement and Return: An Emotional Rollercoaster

This past year marked a major turning point—stepping away from international football and then choosing to return. Chhetri describes that period emotionally and mentally: "I was genuinely very content when I initially retired. I had no intention or desire to come back. The game against Kuwait in Kolkata, where I received that emotional send-off, felt like the perfect conclusion. Mentally, I was at peace and happy. I knew deep down that I had given absolutely everything to my country.

However, I was having a decent year at the club level, and then the national coach called to say the team needed me—not just for goals, but for leadership and guidance. My first instinct was to decline. The sensible, logical answer was definitely no. But he asked me to take a few days to reconsider. I don't know exactly what switch flipped internally, but I believe the child inside me ultimately won that internal debate. I followed my gut instinct and said yes.

One of the primary reasons for returning was to help qualify for the Asian Cup, which unfortunately we did not achieve. So yes, that aspect feels like a loss. But I have absolutely no regrets—not for the nineteen incredible years I played for my country, and not for the short stint after coming back. Interestingly, ninety-nine percent of people advised me not to do it, and they were probably right from a practical standpoint. But I followed my heart, and I am completely at peace with that decision."

Unwavering Discipline: A Way of Life

Even after stepping away from international football, Chhetri's legendary discipline never seemed to waver. He explains what drives him to maintain those high standards away from the spotlight: "It isn't actually difficult because this is the life I have always known and embraced. On paper, it might look like sacrifice, but I genuinely enjoy every aspect of it. When I retired from the national team, I was still actively playing for my club, so not training regularly was never an option—the routine naturally remained. At the very core, I simply love sports passionately. Even when I am eventually done with football, I will still play something—badminton, pickleball, anything competitive. After forty, the body certainly has its limitations. But if you are smarter and more mature in your approach, you can definitely manage it effectively."

The Bengaluru Fans: An Unbreakable Bond

Bengaluru is renowned for its passionate football supporters, and Chhetri has been integral to that journey from day one. He shares a message for fans who have stood by him and the club: "They are truly amazing and incredible. When we started this journey thirteen years ago, our coach, our PR representative, and I would personally go around handing out pamphlets to auto drivers and local shopkeepers, politely asking them to attend our matches. From those humble beginnings to where we stand today, it is absolutely unbelievable. This city is wonderfully open to new experiences—not just in sport, but in culture and community as well. The fans have been consistently incredible throughout. It has been a special, unbreakable bond, and I sincerely hope it continues to grow stronger with time."

Football in India: Evolution and Growth

Reflecting on how football in India has changed and grown over his career, Chhetri observes: "There has been a huge, noticeable jump in awareness and infrastructure. When we were young aspiring players, we didn't clearly know the pathway to professional football. Now, if you ask any dedicated kid, they can confidently tell you which academy to join, which trials to attend, and the progressive levels to advance through. The knowledge and accessibility are miles ahead of what they used to be.

Of course, that increased awareness also brings more intense competition and pressure. But I always advise kids to simply play because you genuinely enjoy the game. Don't overthink about playing for the country prematurely. Even now, when I personally feel pressure mounting, I consciously remind myself to play because I enjoy it fundamentally. We are fortunate as sportspeople—we get to do what we love passionately every single day."

Football's Meaning: Privilege and Gratitude

When asked what football represents for him now at this stage, Chhetri expresses profound gratitude: "First and foremost, I feel highly privileged and honored. What I have been able to accomplish for my country and my club represents an absolute honor beyond words. Second, sport has fundamentally made me a better person overall. Most of the good things in my life have come directly because of football. I will never forget that reality. I carry immense gratitude for the sport itself and for all the people who helped me along this challenging journey. All I can do in return is give my absolute best effort. Sometimes I win, sometimes I lose, but I make sure I leave nothing behind on the field. And now, knowing that soon there will inevitably be a last time, I am simply enjoying every moment to the fullest."

Looking Forward: Family, Football, and Future

At this pivotal phase of his life and career, Chhetri reveals what he anticipates most: "I want to keep enjoying the beautiful game for as long as my body and mind allow. I also want to spend more quality time with my growing family, watch my son develop, and be fully present for him. Football has given me everything meaningful in life. Whether it is playing actively, mentoring younger players, or just being around the sport I love, I will always stay connected to it deeply. But right now, it is about savoring the present moment—the game, the family, and the ongoing journey."
