Sri Lanka Women's Cricket Coach Jamie Siddons Calls for Skill Development
Jamie Siddons, the newly appointed head coach of the Sri Lanka women's cricket team, has highlighted the urgent need for players to enhance their skills to compete effectively with top-tier nations such as India, Australia, and England. Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Siddons outlined his vision for the team as they prepare for upcoming challenges, including the Women's T20 World Cup later this year.
Focus on Skill Enhancement and Performance
Siddons stressed that the team must work on developing more advanced cricketing abilities, including powerful hitting and scoring boundaries without taking unnecessary risks. "I just think we need to develop more skills, hit the ball hard, score more boundaries without being reckless," he said, as cited by news agency PTI. This marks Siddons' first coaching role with a women's team, having previously coached men's sides, including Bangladesh from 2007 to 2011, and playing one ODI for Australia in 1988 against Pakistan.
Upcoming Tour and World Cup Preparations
The coach's immediate focus is on the team's tour of Bangladesh, starting April 20, where he aims to establish their playing style through a three-match T20 and ODI series. "That is where we will look to set our style of play," Siddons remarked. Reflecting on past performances, he noted that Sri Lanka has struggled in the last two women's World Cups, winning only one match, and emphasized the need for improvement. "That is where we need to see how we can perform better," he added.
Targeting Top Teams and Key Matches
Siddons identified India, Australia, New Zealand, and England as the current top teams in women's cricket. He highlighted the importance of the first World Cup match against England in June, stating, "We are focusing on the first game against England, on their home ground and home soil." This strategic focus aims to build momentum early in the tournament.
Coaching Transition and Past Success
Siddons has taken over from Ramesh Ratnayake, who led Sri Lanka to victory in the 2024 Asia Cup with a win over India. This change in leadership comes at a critical time as the team seeks to elevate its performance on the global stage. With Siddons' experience and fresh perspective, Sri Lanka hopes to make significant strides in the upcoming competitions.
