Barabati Stadium's Red-Soil Pitch Set for Historic India-South Africa T20 Clash on Dec 9
Red-Soil Pitch Chosen for India vs SA T20 in Cuttack

The stage is set for a thrilling encounter as the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack will feature a red-soil pitch for the first time in its history for the upcoming T20 International between India and South Africa on December 9. This significant departure from the venue's traditional black-soil surfaces was confirmed following an inspection by BCCI east zone chief pitch curator Ashish Bhowmick.

Curator's Inspection Seals the Deal

During his visit on Wednesday, Bhowmick, accompanied by senior officials from the Odisha Cricket Association (OCA), conducted a thorough assessment of the two prepared tracks. The OCA had readied both a black-soil strip, sourced from Kalahandi, and a red-soil wicket, brought from Maharashtra. After a detailed review of critical parameters including bounce, hardness, moisture levels, and expected behaviour under floodlights, the decision tilted in favour of the red-soil surface.

Bhowmick concluded that the red-soil pitch is ideal for a high-scoring contest, also approving the winter outfield conditions. His selection was based on the pitch's ability to offer better pace, consistent carry, and a balanced contest between bat and ball, especially following the winter season's moisture influence.

Why the Red Soil Pitch Was Preferred

Explaining the rationale behind this historic choice, OCA secretary Sanjay Behera stated that the selection reflects the association's commitment to delivering a top-class match experience. He emphasized the natural characteristics of the red-soil surface that promise an engaging game.

"The red-soil pitch naturally offers more bounce and quicker pace, which allows for fluent stroke-play and helps batsmen play their shots freely," Behera said. "Simultaneously, it keeps the bowlers, particularly the pacers, in the game throughout the innings. This essential balance is why the red wicket was the preferred choice. Our ground staff has worked tirelessly, and we are confident, as per curator Bhowmick's view, that it will produce an exciting, high-scoring encounter."

Final Preparations and Ticket Sales Begin

With the pitch finalized, match preparations are now in full swing at the Barabati Stadium. The OCA has already initiated ticket sales, opening counters at its office for affiliated institutions and district sports associations. All systems are being geared up to welcome fans for what promises to be a thrilling T20 showdown under the winter skies on December 9.

This match marks the opening fixture of a five-match T20I series between India and South Africa. The series will subsequently move to Mullanpur, Dharamsala, Lucknow, and Ahmedabad for matches on December 11, 14, 17, and 19, respectively.
