PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi Grapples with Escalating PSL Controversies

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi is confronting a series of mounting challenges surrounding the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2026, with reports indicating his particular displeasure over a hotel-security incident involving Lahore Qalandars players. This situation unfolds as the tournament is already operating under significant constraints, including matches in Lahore being held without spectators and a reduced number of venues due to fuel and travel issues linked to the West Asia crisis.

Hotel-Security Breach Raises Discipline Concerns

The hotel-security issue, which emerged earlier in the tournament, involved Lahore Qalandars captain Shaheen Shah Afridi and Zimbabwe all-rounder Sikandar Raza. They were accused of violating security protocols at the team hotel in Lahore by permitting visitors into a room despite objections from security personnel. This incident has sparked serious questions about player discipline and the overall security arrangements in a league where safety measures were a paramount focus.

A PCB source, quoted by news agency PTI, revealed, "Chairman Mohsin Naqvi is not happy in particular about the hotel incident since the PCB is taking great care to ensure the event is held without an incident and has even disallowed spectators for the league matches at the Gaddafi stadium for the time being."

Ball-Tampering Controversy Adds to PCB's Woes

The pressure on Naqvi and the PCB intensified following a ball-tampering controversy during Lahore Qalandars' match against Karachi Kings on Sunday. Just before the final over of Karachi's chase, with 14 runs required, umpires inspected the ball and determined its condition had been altered. A five-run penalty was imposed on Lahore, and the ball was replaced, reducing the target to nine runs. Karachi ultimately secured victory by four wickets with three balls remaining.

The matter escalated further when Lahore batter Fakhar Zaman was charged with a Level 3 offence under the PSL Code of Conduct for allegedly altering the ball. Fakhar denied the charge during a hearing before match referee Roshan Mahanama. Shaheen Afridi later stated the franchise would review footage and distanced himself from the incident, adding another layer of complexity to the controversy.

Broader Concerns Over PSL's Image and Management

For the PCB, the concerns now extend beyond isolated incidents to the broader reputation of the league. The source added, "The board is unhappy about the PSL gaining traction for the wrong reasons, starting with the incident of the ball colour turning pink during the first match of the league." This reference to an earlier issue highlights a pattern of unwanted attention that threatens to overshadow the tournament's sporting achievements.

PSL 2026 had already commenced under challenging conditions, with limited venues and restricted crowd access, urging fans to watch from home. The hotel-security breach and ball-tampering allegations have compounded these difficulties, creating additional hurdles for the board's management efforts. As Mohsin Naqvi navigates these controversies, the focus remains on restoring discipline and ensuring the league proceeds smoothly amidst ongoing logistical and security challenges.
