Nagpur Police Introduce AI Tools for Cricket Match Crowd Control
Nagpur traffic police have unveiled a comprehensive plan to manage the massive influx of cricket fans expected for the India-New Zealand T20 International match. Over forty thousand spectators will converge at Jamtha Stadium on January 21, creating significant traffic and security challenges.
AI Applications Take Center Stage
For the first time, authorities will deploy artificial intelligence tools to assist police personnel on the ground. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Lohit Matani confirmed the implementation of two specialized applications.
The Parking Pal application will provide real-time updates about available parking spaces at designated locations. This system helps police manage vehicular movement efficiently. When one parking area reaches capacity, the application immediately prompts officers to divert vehicles to alternative parking spots.
Matani explained that the second application represents the AI Nirikshak Project of Nagpur police. This system will play a crucial role in crowd management throughout the event.
Advanced Surveillance and Security Measures
The AI Nirikshak system operates through CCTV cameras installed in and around the stadium premises and along key approach routes. This technology enables multiple security functions simultaneously.
- Identification of known criminals using the police Simba database
- Detection of suspicious behavior or potential weapon presence
- Monitoring of crowd density in different areas
"This advanced system will enable our police teams to respond promptly according to the developing situation," Matani emphasized.
Additional Traffic Challenges on Match Day
Complicating the traffic management scenario, the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) will occur simultaneously on January 21. The examination is scheduled between 3 pm and 5 pm, overlapping with match preparations.
One examination center, St Pallotti College, sits along a busy traffic corridor. Traffic police have specifically appealed to students and their families to plan their commute carefully.
"I strongly urge parents and students to maintain a one-hour buffer period to reach the examination center," Matani advised. "Please make all necessary arrangements well in advance."
Specific Traffic Advisories for Commuters
The traffic department has issued clear guidelines for different groups of commuters:
- General commuters should avoid using Wardha Road during peak congestion hours unless absolutely necessary. Critical periods include 5 pm to 7 pm and again from 10 pm to 11:30 pm on match day.
- Cricket fans are encouraged to use public transportation, particularly the metro rail system, to reach Jamtha Stadium and avoid traffic congestion.
- Commercial vehicle operators must note that heavy vehicles face restrictions on match-day routes. Authorities have arranged alternative diversions to minimize disruption.
These preparations follow detailed planning by the traffic wing ahead of this high-profile cricket encounter. The Times of India reported the extensive measures being implemented to ensure smooth operations during the major sporting event.
