Muktsar pacer Gurnoor Brar made a memorable ODI debut for India against Afghanistan in Dharamsala on Saturday, claiming a wicket in his very first over. The 25-year-old, known for his high-arm action and ability to generate steep bounce at speeds touching 145 km/h, has been rapidly rising through the ranks.
Rapid Rise in International Cricket
After earning his maiden call-up to India's Test and ODI squads recently, Brar's debut marks another significant milestone. The 6-foot-5 pacer represents Punjab in domestic cricket and the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He is being groomed as a hit-the-deck bowler with an eye on the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa.
Impressive Debut Performance
Dharamsala's seam-friendly conditions and moisture-laden air provided an ideal stage for Brar's international debut. In his first over, Afghanistan opener Ibrahim Zadran miscued a good-length delivery outside off stump, skying the ball to skipper Shubman Gill at mid-off for a straightforward catch.
India bowling coach Morne Morkel, a renowned hit-the-deck fast bowler during his playing days, praised the new crop of pacers after observing them closely at the national training camp. "My first impressions were that it almost felt like they had been part of the squad for five years. I saw no nervousness in their faces," Morkel said during the pre-match press conference on Friday.
Domestic and First-Class Record
Brar has claimed 52 wickets in 18 First-Class matches and has also featured in nine List A games and domestic T20 matches for Punjab. He enjoyed a phenomenal 2024-25 Ranji Trophy season, finishing as Punjab's leading wicket-taker. Earlier, he had caught the selectors' attention during India A's tour of Australia, where he picked up six wickets against Australia A.
With his pace, bounce, and confidence, Brar is expected to be a key asset for India in the lead-up to the 2027 World Cup.
