The controversy erupted during the match between Lahore Qalandars and Karachi Kings. Umpire Faisal Afridi took the ball from bowler Haris Rauf for inspection after it had been passed between teammates Shaheen Shah Afridi and Fakhar Zaman. Following a discussion with fellow umpire Sharfuddoula, the officials decided to replace the ball, believing its condition had been altered.
The situation gained further traction when Shaheen Afridi provided an unclear response to commentator Ramiz Raja during the post-match presentation, failing to address the tampering allegations directly.
Rashid Latif's Viral Comments on Social Media
In a video that has gone viral across social media platforms, Latif expressed his views on the controversy. "I don't want to talk about ball tampering," Latif stated. "Otherwise, I will have to talk about my playing days, as it would be unfair to only discuss current players."
Latif drew a comparison to marketing strategies in other fields, suggesting controversies are sometimes manufactured to boost interest. "If any film is coming out and you know it will be a flop, it is made into a controversy," he explained. "Like they did with The Hundred when they said no Pakistan player would be playing. No one knew The Hundred before that. Now there is a controversy in PSL and it will become headlines. This news will not be relevant for more than 24 hours."
Fakhar Zaman's Charge and Pending Hearing
Meanwhile, Fakhar Zaman has been formally charged with a Level 3 offence under Article 2.14 of the PSL Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel. The charge relates to an alleged breach of Article 41.3, which prohibits any action that changes the condition of the ball.
Zaman denied the charge during an initial hearing conducted by match referee Roshan Mahanama. Another hearing is expected within the next 48 hours, after which a final decision will be made. If proven guilty, Zaman and potentially the Lahore Qalandars franchise could face further disciplinary action.

The incident occurred in the second innings, just before the final over of Karachi Kings' chase, when they needed 14 runs to win. After Zaman was seen speaking with Rauf and Shaheen, the umpire inspected the ball and concluded its condition had been changed.
