The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) has completed a major upgrade of the floodlighting system at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, replacing the old metal-halide lamps with state-of-the-art LED Sports Floodlighting Technology. The previous lighting system had been in continuous operation since 2010.
New LED System Enhances Visibility
The new LED floodlights are designed to provide superior illumination across the entire playing field, with more uniform light distribution and reduced glare for players and spectators. The upgrade also improves broadcast quality by eliminating flicker and enhancing color rendering, which is critical for high-definition television coverage. According to KSCA officials, the LED system consumes significantly less power than the older metal-halide lights, aligning with the association's sustainability goals.
Impact on Matches and Training
The enhanced lighting will benefit both day-night matches and evening practice sessions. The Chinnaswamy Stadium, home to the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the Indian Premier League, will now meet the latest standards set by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for international fixtures. The KSCA stated that the upgrade was carried out during the off-season to minimize disruption to the cricketing calendar.
Energy Efficiency and Long-Term Savings
The LED technology is expected to reduce energy consumption by up to 50% compared to the previous metal-halide system. Additionally, LEDs have a longer operational life, reducing maintenance costs and the frequency of replacements. This move is part of a broader trend in Indian cricket stadiums modernizing infrastructure to host international events more sustainably.
KSCA President R. Raghuram said, "This upgrade ensures that the Chinnaswamy Stadium remains at the forefront of cricketing infrastructure in the country. The new LED floodlights will provide an unmatched experience for players and fans alike." The project was completed within the estimated budget and timeline, with no disruptions to ongoing training schedules.
The Chinnaswamy Stadium is one of the oldest cricket grounds in India, having hosted its first Test match in 1974. The floodlight upgrade is the latest in a series of renovations, including improved drainage systems and seating upgrades, aimed at maintaining its status as a premier venue for domestic and international cricket.
