Swiatek Falls to Eala in Fourth Round Shock
Defending champion Iga Swiatek was knocked out of Wimbledon 2026 in the fourth round on Friday, losing 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 to unranked qualifier Alexandra Eala of the Philippines. The match, played on Centre Court, lasted two hours and 14 minutes, with Eala breaking Swiatek's serve five times.
Eala Makes History for the Philippines
Eala, 19, becomes the first Filipino player—male or female—to reach a Grand Slam quarterfinal in the Open Era. Ranked No. 168, she entered the tournament as a qualifier and has now defeated three seeded players en route to the last eight. "It's a dream come true," Eala said after the match. "I believed I could win, but to do it on this stage is incredible."
Swiatek Struggles with Consistency
Swiatek, who had won the title in 2025, struggled with unforced errors, tallying 32 compared to Eala's 18. The Polish star also won only 52% of her first-serve points, well below her season average. "I didn't play my best tennis today," Swiatek admitted. "Alexandra played aggressively and deserved the win."
Eala's Path to the Quarterfinals
Eala's run includes wins over No. 14 seed Madison Keys in the first round, No. 23 seed Liudmila Samsonova in the third round, and now Swiatek. She is the first qualifier to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinals since 2019. Her next opponent will be No. 3 seed Aryna Sabalenka, who defeated Karolina Muchova 6-4, 6-3 in her fourth-round match.
Impact on the Women's Draw
With Swiatek's exit, the top half of the draw opens up for remaining contenders. Sabalenka is now the highest seed left in Swiatek's half, while No. 2 seed Coco Gauff remains in the bottom half. The last time the defending champion failed to reach the quarterfinals at Wimbledon was in 2021 when Ash Barty lost in the fourth round.
Eala's Background and Rise
Eala, a former junior world No. 1, won the 2022 US Open girls' singles title. She turned professional in 2023 and has steadily climbed the rankings. Her victory over Swiatek is the biggest win of her career and marks the first time a Filipino has beaten a world No. 1 in any major tennis event.
