Madikeri: With the aim of providing national-level sports facilities in Kodagu district, the state government has taken up construction of a sports complex at a cost of Rs 45 crore at V Badaga village. Virajpet MLA AS Ponnanna visited the site on Monday and inspected the works.
Facilities at the Complex
The sports complex, being built on about 11.5 acres of government land, will feature an international-level swimming pool, artificial grass hockey field, badminton court, tennis court, shooting range, football field, cricket stadium, well-equipped gym, and necessary facilities for various indoor sports.
MLA's Remarks
Speaking to reporters after inspecting the works, Ponnanna said that this is a very important project for Kodagu district, which is known as the home of sports. The project has been designed with the aim of providing the necessary infrastructure for young talents. Thousands of athletes are planning to undergo training at the centre.
Rajya Sabha member Ajay Maken has decided to allocate his six-year local area development funds for this project, which will be released in phases, he said.
In addition, the Karnataka government has also sanctioned funds in the budget. The first phase of the work is expected to be completed by the end of 2028, and the goal is to develop this complex into a national-level training centre in the future, the MLA noted. He said along with the system of training thousands of students, separate hostels will also be built for young men and women. The land required for the construction of the complex was transferred to the name of the youth services and sports department, he said.
