KKR Keep Playoffs Hopes Alive with Dominant Win Over GT

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) kept their IPL 2026 playoffs hopes alive with a dominant eight-wicket victory over Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Eden Gardens on Thursday. Chasing a target of 166, KKR reached 167 for 2 in 18.1 overs, riding on a brilliant unbeaten 78 from Venkatesh Iyer and a solid 52 from Shubman Gill.

GT Innings: A Competitive Total

Batting first, Gujarat Titans posted 165 for 7 in their 20 overs. Opener Wriddhiman Saha top-scored with 44 off 32 balls, while David Miller added 37 off 28. However, KKR bowlers struck at regular intervals to prevent GT from posting a bigger total. Spinner Sunil Narine was economical, taking 2 for 29 in his four overs, while Andre Russell chipped in with 2 for 33.

KKR's Chase: Clinical and Composed

In response, KKR openers Shubman Gill and Venkatesh Iyer provided a solid start, adding 68 runs for the first wicket. Gill fell for 52 off 40 balls, but Iyer continued the assault, smashing 78 not out off 53 balls, including 9 fours and 2 sixes. Nitish Rana remained unbeaten on 30 off 22 to seal the win with 11 balls to spare.

The victory took KKR to 14 points from 13 matches, moving them to fourth place in the points table. Gujarat Titans, meanwhile, slipped to fifth with 12 points from 13 games.

What This Means for Playoffs Race

With this win, KKR have put themselves in a strong position to qualify for the playoffs. They will need to win their final league match against Sunrisers Hyderabad to confirm their spot. Gujarat Titans, on the other hand, face an uphill task as they take on Rajasthan Royals in their last group game.

KKR captain Shreyas Iyer praised his team's all-round performance. "We knew we had to win this game to stay alive. The bowlers did a great job to restrict them, and the batters finished it off nicely. Venkatesh and Shubman played really well," he said after the match.

Gujarat Titans captain Hardik Pandya admitted his team was outplayed. "We were 15-20 runs short. The wicket was good for batting, but we didn't get enough partnerships. KKR bowled well in the middle overs," he said.

The match also saw a moment of controversy when GT's Rashid Khan was given out obstructing the field, a decision that sparked debate. However, KKR's comprehensive win overshadowed the incident.
