India's T20 World Cup Preparations Bolstered by Key Fitness Updates
As the T20 World Cup approaches within less than a week, the Indian cricket team has received a significant and timely boost on the fitness front. Positive developments have emerged regarding two crucial players: all-rounder Washington Sundar and premier batter Tilak Varma. These updates come at a critical juncture as India finalizes its preparations for the global tournament.
Washington Sundar's Rehabilitation Progress in Bengaluru
The 26-year-old all-rounder Washington Sundar is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru. This follows a side strain he sustained during the recent ODI series against New Zealand. India's captain, Suryakumar Yadav, provided encouraging news about Sundar's recovery during a post-match press conference in Thiruvananthapuram.
"Washington is doing well. I spoke to him yesterday. He has almost started bowling and batting," Yadav confirmed after India's 46-run victory over New Zealand on Saturday. This indicates that Sundar is making steady progress and could be available for selection as he resumes both key aspects of his game.
Tilak Varma's Return to Full Fitness Nears
Meanwhile, 23-year-old left-handed batter Tilak Varma is also nearing a complete return to fitness. Varma has been sidelined for nearly a month after undergoing testicular surgery, an injury he sustained during a Ranji Trophy match. Captain Yadav shared optimistic updates about Varma's condition as well.
"He has been shaping up well. I heard he will be playing two games in Mumbai ahead of the T20 World Cup. I spoke to him yesterday. He has started batting, bowling and fielding. Hope to have him soon," Yadav added. This suggests that Varma is expected to link up with the Indian squad ahead of the tournament, potentially participating in warm-up matches to regain match fitness.
India's World Cup Preparation Schedule
The Indian team is set to assemble in Mumbai, where they will play two warm-up games before their World Cup campaign begins. Their opening match is scheduled against the USA on February 7. The fitness updates on Sundar and Varma provide valuable flexibility and depth to the squad as they enter the final phase of preparation.
These developments are particularly significant given the timing. With the tournament so close, having key players recover from injuries can dramatically impact team composition and strategy. The Indian management will be closely monitoring both players' progress in the coming days to make final decisions about their inclusion in the World Cup squad.
