The San Francisco Giants are not planning to break up their core players at this time, even after a difficult start to the season. Recent speculation suggested the team might consider moving stars like Rafael Devers, Willy Adames, or Matt Chapman before the trade deadline. However, according to MLB insider Robert Murray, the Giants are not having those conversations internally.
Speaking on Foul Territory, Murray stated, “Rafael Devers, Willy Adames, Matt Chapman, the Giants have not internally discussed trading any of those players. They want to continue to build around them. They want to continue to try to compete this season.”
Giants Focus on Competing Despite Rough Record
This update comes at a crucial time for San Francisco. The Giants have struggled through the first part of the year and currently hold an 18-25 record, placing them fourth in the National League West. Despite the disappointing performance, the front office remains focused on staying competitive rather than initiating a rebuild.
Rafael Devers’ Slow Start
Much attention has been on Rafael Devers, whose season has not matched his usual high standards. Devers is widely regarded as one of baseball’s premier hitters when in form, but he has yet to find his rhythm this year. Through 43 games, he is batting .247 with a .295 on-base percentage and a .395 slugging percentage. Nevertheless, trading him now would likely be unwise for San Francisco. His value around the league could increase quickly if he returns to his typical production levels. Teams understand the caliber of player Devers can be when healthy and confident at the plate. Consequently, the Giants may see greater value in retaining him rather than moving him during a slump.
Key Players in the Long-Term Plan
The same logic applies to Willy Adames and Matt Chapman. Both are considered vital pieces for the club moving forward. Even though the Giants have encountered problems this season, the organization does not appear ready to abandon the 2026 campaign.
The National League West remains one of baseball’s toughest divisions, with the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres continuing to play strong baseball. Nonetheless, San Francisco could stay in the Wild Card race if the team starts playing more consistently over the next few months.
As the trade deadline approaches, the Giants will eventually need to decide how aggressive they want to be. But for now, the message from inside the organization is clear: San Francisco still believes this group can compete, and Rafael Devers remains part of those plans.
