FIFA relaxes water bottle policy for World Cup fans after backlash
FIFA relaxes water bottle policy for World Cup fans

FIFA has announced a relaxation of its water bottle policy for the upcoming World Cup, allowing fans to bring their own water into some stadiums after facing criticism. The decision comes as a response to concerns raised by spectators and fan groups regarding access to hydration, especially in venues with limited shade.

New policy allows sealed plastic bottles

In a social media post, FIFA stated that fans will be permitted to carry one soft, plastic, 20-ounce (590 milliliter) factory-sealed disposable water bottle into any match taking place in the United States or Canada. This adjustment modifies the previous rule that had barred spectators from bringing refillable water bottles into the tournament's 16 stadiums across North America.

Safety concerns limit reusable bottles

FIFA Chief Operating Officer Heimo Schirgi explained in a video released by the organization that hard-sided reusable water bottles will still not be allowed inside stadiums due to safety and security reasons. FIFA reiterated on Friday, "For the avoidance of doubt, reusable water bottles may not be brought into the stadium."

The initial stadium rules had permitted fans to bring a transparent reusable bottle up to one liter (33.8 ounces) in capacity. However, this policy was updated on Thursday, drawing criticism from an English fan group. The group argued that FIFA had previously assured fans they could carry empty plastic bottles to fill with freely available water at the tournament, where heat and extreme weather are expected to be a factor.

Background of the controversy

The original policy had prohibited refillable bottles, leading to concerns about dehydration and heat-related illnesses among spectators. Many fans voiced their displeasure on social media, prompting FIFA to reconsider its stance. The revised policy aims to strike a balance between safety and fan comfort, allowing sealed disposable bottles while maintaining restrictions on hard-sided containers.

FIFA emphasized that the decision was made after careful consideration of security protocols and the well-being of attendees. The organization continues to encourage fans to stay hydrated and utilize water stations available at the stadiums.
