FIFA Grants Approval for AIFF Election Postponement to Ensure Compliance with New Sports Act
In a significant development for Indian football governance, FIFA, the global governing body for football, has officially communicated to the All India Football Federation (AIFF) that it has "no objection" to postponing the federation's elections. Originally scheduled for September 2026, the elections will now be held in December 2026. This delay is intended to allow the AIFF to fully align its constitution with the newly enacted National Sports Governance Act 2025 and its associated regulations, ensuring uninterrupted administration of football in India.
Background on AIFF Leadership and Election Timeline
AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey was elected on September 2, 2022, for a standard four-year term, with elections typically required before the term's conclusion. However, with the implementation of the National Sports Governance Act 2025, the AIFF informed relevant governing bodies that it needs to remain in office until later this year. This extension is crucial to maintain stability and facilitate the structural changes mandated by the new legislation.
Government Support and Extension Details
On December 22, 2025, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports issued a notice acknowledging that the structural adjustments necessary for all national sports federations to comply with the NSGA are foundational. To support this transition, the ministry granted a one-time extension to federations with elections due in the current calendar year, permitting them to conduct their next elections by December 31, 2026. AIFF deputy secretary general M Satyanarayan detailed this in a letter to FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) last month, emphasizing the need for compliance.
FIFA's Response and Ongoing Support
FIFA has not only expressed its lack of objection but also reiterated its commitment to supporting the AIFF throughout this process. In a letter to the federation last week, Emile Doms, associations governance services manager at FIFA, stated, "We kindly ask that you keep FIFA and the AFC informed of any further steps in the amendment process of the AIFF constitution, and in particular to share with us a document outlining the key amendments and necessary steps required with tentative timelines to ensure compliance with the NSGA." This highlights FIFA's collaborative approach and dedication to ensuring smooth governance transitions.
AIFF's Internal Deadlines for Compliance
Meanwhile, the AIFF has proactively instructed its member associations to complete the adoption of amendments to their constitutional documents on or before June 30, 2026. This internal deadline is set to ensure that all levels of Indian football governance are prepared and aligned with the new regulatory framework, paving the way for a seamless election process in December 2026.
