Former India opening batter and prominent cricket analyst Aakash Chopra has issued a direct challenge to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain Ajinkya Rahane, stating the veteran batsman has a crucial point to prove in the upcoming IPL 2026 season. Chopra specifically highlighted long-standing concerns about Rahane's ability to maintain scoring momentum once the field restrictions are lifted.
Rahane's 2025 Performance and Lingering Questions
Rahane led KKR from the front with the bat during IPL 2025, finishing as the franchise's top run-scorer. He amassed an impressive 390 runs in 12 innings at a strike rate of 147.72. Despite these solid numbers, persistent questions surrounded his effectiveness in the middle overs, particularly against spin bowling, which many analysts felt occasionally slowed KKR's innings at critical junctures.
Speaking candidly on his popular YouTube channel, Chopra admitted he has been among those questioning Rahane's role beyond the powerplay. "Opportunities are plenty. Maybe Ajinkya Rahane, because I am one of those guys who have been slightly critical that he will have to be played in the powerplay as his role becomes extremely limited after that, but you can prove me wrong," Chopra stated.
He elaborated further, framing the upcoming season as a golden chance for the KKR skipper. "It's an opportunity. Not that you need to prove me wrong. Why would you even bother? However, if you score a lot of runs in the powerplay and after that as well, it's a great opportunity for you," Chopra added, emphasizing the platform Rahane has to redefine his T20 batting narrative.

He might get the opportunity to bat slightly up the order this time, and he might flourish," Chopra observed, hinting at a potential promotion in the batting lineup for the explosive finisher.
