Chopra: Rahane Must Prove Critics Wrong in IPL 2026

Aakash Chopra Challenges Ajinkya Rahane to Silence Critics in IPL 2026

Former India opening batter and prominent cricket analyst Aakash Chopra has issued a direct challenge to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain Ajinkya Rahane, stating the veteran batsman has a crucial point to prove in the upcoming IPL 2026 season. Chopra specifically highlighted long-standing concerns about Rahane's ability to maintain scoring momentum once the field restrictions are lifted.

Rahane's 2025 Performance and Lingering Questions

Rahane led KKR from the front with the bat during IPL 2025, finishing as the franchise's top run-scorer. He amassed an impressive 390 runs in 12 innings at a strike rate of 147.72. Despite these solid numbers, persistent questions surrounded his effectiveness in the middle overs, particularly against spin bowling, which many analysts felt occasionally slowed KKR's innings at critical junctures.

Speaking candidly on his popular YouTube channel, Chopra admitted he has been among those questioning Rahane's role beyond the powerplay. "Opportunities are plenty. Maybe Ajinkya Rahane, because I am one of those guys who have been slightly critical that he will have to be played in the powerplay as his role becomes extremely limited after that, but you can prove me wrong," Chopra stated.

He elaborated further, framing the upcoming season as a golden chance for the KKR skipper. "It's an opportunity. Not that you need to prove me wrong. Why would you even bother? However, if you score a lot of runs in the powerplay and after that as well, it's a great opportunity for you," Chopra added, emphasizing the platform Rahane has to redefine his T20 batting narrative.

Countering the Gambhir Narrative and Leadership Dynamics

Chopra also addressed the broader narrative surrounding KKR's perceived dependence on former captain and mentor Gautam Gambhir. Some critics suggest the franchise struggles to achieve success without Gambhir's direct influence. Chopra believes Rahane now possesses the perfect platform to counter this perception by guiding the team to an IPL title, thereby cementing his own legacy as a successful KKR leader.

In the same discussion, Chopra shifted focus to the growing stature of Rinku Singh within the KKR setup. Currently serving as the team's vice-captain, Chopra suggested Rinku could emerge as a genuine leadership contender if he delivers consistent performances this season.

"Rinku Singh is the vice-captain. Could be a potential captain by the next season. So there could be a huge role for him. He is always made to bat down the order. He might get the opportunity to bat slightly up the order this time, and he might flourish," Chopra observed, hinting at a potential promotion in the batting lineup for the explosive finisher.

Varun Chakaravarthy's Call to Rediscover Form

Chopra did not spare KKR's mystery spinner, Varun Chakaravarthy, from scrutiny. He stated that IPL 2026 presents a critical opportunity for the bowler to rediscover his wicket-taking prowess after a mixed end to the recent T20 World Cup.

"It's time for Varun Chakaravarthy to make people acknowledge his superiority once again because the last four matches in the World Cup were extremely cold. He has to come back to his wicket-taking self," Chopra asserted.

Varun concluded the T20 World Cup 2026 as the joint-highest wicket-taker, with 14 wickets in nine innings. However, his economy rate was a relatively high 9.25. While he started the tournament strongly, claiming nine wickets in India's first four matches, his impact noticeably waned in the latter stages, where he managed only five wickets while conceding runs at an increased rate.

Chopra's analysis sets the stage for a fascinating IPL 2026 campaign for KKR, with Rahane's batting evolution, Rinku Singh's rising influence, and Varun Chakaravarthy's quest for consistency forming key subplots for the two-time champions.
