Jasprit Bumrah's Uncharacteristic Wicket Drought in IPL 2026 Raises Concerns

Star Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah is experiencing an unusual lean phase with the ball during the ongoing IPL 2026 season. The Mumbai Indians speedster has now gone five consecutive matches without taking a single wicket, a surprising statistic for a bowler renowned for dismantling batting line-ups with his lethal pace and pinpoint accuracy.

Recent Performance Against Punjab Kings Highlights Struggle

In Thursday's match against Punjab Kings, Bumrah's struggles were particularly evident as he conceded 41 runs from his full quota of four overs while remaining wicketless. Despite Mumbai Indians posting a competitive total of 195/6 in their 20 overs, the bowling attack failed to defend it, with Punjab Kings chasing down the target of 196 with 21 balls and seven wickets to spare.

Coach Mahela Jayawardene Offers Support and Explanation

Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene has come out in strong support of his premier bowler despite the concerning statistics. "Bumrah is bowling well, it is just where we are not putting pressure in the powerplay," Jayawardene told reporters after the match.

The former Sri Lanka captain elaborated on the tactical challenges Bumrah is facing: "They (opposition) know they don't need to take too much risk against Bumrah. We tried a few different things which he is trying as well but they are batting well. I can't put a finger (on something) and say that he hasn't taken a wicket."

Injury Concerns and Recovery Timeline Revealed

Jayawardene also disclosed that Bumrah had been managing a minor injury concern at the beginning of the tournament. "I think initially because he had a slight niggle which came from the World Cup," he explained while addressing questions about Bumrah's fluctuating pace throughout the season.

The coach provided reassurance about Bumrah's current physical condition: "We wanted to build him up (and) over the last few games his speeds have gone up. We've looked at all that so he's very comfortable. Sometimes, you need a bit of luck as well."

Bowling Unit's Overall Performance Under Scrutiny

While defending his star bowler, Jayawardene acknowledged broader issues with Mumbai Indians' bowling attack this season. "But as a (bowling) unit, like I said before, we've lacked that penetration in different surfaces and that's something that we need to work (on) and see what we need to do," he admitted frankly.

The five-time champions are currently languishing in ninth position on the points table with just one victory from five matches, having suffered four defeats. This poor start puts additional pressure on both the batting and bowling departments to turn their season around quickly.

Looking Ahead to Crucial Fixtures

Mumbai Indians will face Gujarat Titans in their next encounter on April 20, a match that has become crucial for their playoff aspirations. The team management will be hoping Bumrah can break his wicketless streak and return to his match-winning ways, with Jayawardene expressing confidence that once the breakthrough comes, the floodgates might open.

"(Bumrah) bowled some really good balls initially to Shreyas (Iyer) but wasn't lucky enough. Once he starts taking wickets he might not be able to stop him doing that," the coach added optimistically, suggesting that a single wicket could spark a return to form for one of cricket's most feared bowlers.
